Chương 4 - The Poisoned Well

By noon, the news of Camden’s abrupt ouster had rippled through the financial district like a localized earthquake.

I spent four hours with our public relations directors and risk managers, drafting a statement that minimized the damage to our stock price.

We characterized the termination as an internal restructuring driven by our commitment to transparent governance.

At two o'clock, I decided to leave the corporate tower to clear my head, directing my driver to take me to the St. Regis for lunch.

I needed thirty minutes of quiet space away from ringing phones, forensic spreadsheets, and anxious department heads.

The hotel restaurant was subdued, populated by foreign diplomats, private wealth managers, and discreet socialites.

I took a corner table near the back, ordering hot tea and a light salad, determined to plan my next legal maneuver in peace.

Before my tea had even cooled, the quiet atmosphere of the dining room was shattered by the sharp clatter of designer heels.

Lila Monroe strode past the startled maître d', her eyes scanning the room until they locked onto my table with predatory fury.

She was wearing a black leather trench coat, dark glasses pushed up into her bleached hair, and carrying a crocodile Birkin bag that Camden had charged to our London account.

Two junior hostesses tried to intercept her, but she brushed past them with aggressive entitlement.

"Vivian!" she yelled, ignoring the horrified glances of wealthy patrons dining nearby.

She marched up to my table, slamming both of her manicured hands down onto the crisp white tablecloth.

The silverware rattled, and a small splash of water spilled from my crystal goblet onto the linen.

"You think you’re so clever, don't you?" Lila hissed, leaning down so close I could smell her heavy vanilla perfume.

"You think cutting off Camden’s corporate credit cards makes you powerful?"

"You are creating a public scene in an establishment that requires a dress code and basic dignity," I said calmly, taking a slow sip of tea.

"I don't give a damn about this stuffy room!" she snapped, her voice trembling with manic rage.

"Camden is the brains behind your entire operation, and everybody on Wall Street knows it!"

"He built your private charter fleet into a national brand while you sat in your mansion counting your father's antique silver!"

I set my cup down on the saucer with deliberate slowness, looking her up and down with clinical interest.

"Did Camden send you here to beg, or did you come on your own initiative because your card was declined at the salon?" I asked.

Lila’s face twisted in embarrassment, confirming my suspicion instantly.

"He is leaving you!" she spat, leaning closer, trying desperately to hurt me with words she thought were lethal.

"He hasn't loved you in years; he laughed at you every time he came to my apartment!"

"He told me being married to you was like sleeping beside a marble gravestone!"

"He promised me that when the divorce is finalized, I will be the one living in that Greenwich mansion while you crawl away with scraps!"

I leaned back against the plush velvet banquette, looking at her with genuine pity rather than anger.

"Has Camden answered any of your phone calls in the last three hours, Lila?" I asked quietly.

Her mouth snapped shut, her defensive posture suddenly wavering.

"He... he is in meetings with his attorneys," she stammered, her confidence beginning to fray.

"He is preparing his counter-lawsuit."

"Camden is currently sitting in a holding room at our corporate headquarters, watching security guards pack his golf clubs into cardboard boxes," I informed her.

"His personal accounts have been frozen under a temporary court injunction Arthur obtained at eleven this morning."

"The Miami penthouse you think belongs to you was purchased with stolen enterprise funds."

"Our legal team filed a lis pendens on the title two hours ago."

Lila blinked, her fingers tightening on the edge of the table.

"What does that mean?" she demanded, fear finally breaking through her aggressive veneer.

"It means the property is subject to immediate corporate seizure under federal anti-money laundering statutes," I explained.

"It means you do not own a penthouse in Miami, Lila."

"You own an impending subpoena from the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York."

Her face lost every trace of color, the heavy bronzer on her cheekbones looking suddenly unnatural against her pale skin.

"No," she whispered, shaking her head.

"Camden told me the funds were an executive bonus; he told me the paperwork was completely clean."

"Camden lied to you, just as he lied to me, his board of directors, and his own mother," I said, folding my linen napkin.

"He used you as an offshore drop box to conceal assets before his attempted corporate takeover with Julian Vance."

"And the moment Vance realizes Camden has been stripped of his voting proxy, Vance will drop him like an infected limb."

"You were never his future, Miss Monroe; you were simply an expendable distraction he paid for with my money."

The restaurant manager arrived at the table, flanked by two burly hotel security officers.

"Mrs. Pierce, is this person disturbing your lunch?" the manager asked, his tone polite yet deadly serious.

"She was just leaving," I replied, not looking at Lila again.

Lila stood frozen for a second, clutching her stolen Birkin bag to her chest as the security guards stepped closer.

"This isn't over, Vivian," she whispered, her voice cracking with pure terror as she realized the golden life she had imagined was crumbling around her.

"It was over the moment you stepped off that jet wearing my scarf," I told her without looking up.

"Now please remove yourself from my presence before I have the police arrest you for harassment."

She turned and practically ran out of the dining room, her heels clicking frantically against the marble floor as the entire room watched her humiliating retreat.
