Chương 2 - The Audit of Broken Vows

The town car sped through the darkness toward the Alden family estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, leaving the neon haze of New Jersey behind.

Inside the quiet vehicle, the only sound was the rhythmic tapping of Nora’s keyboard as she mirrored corporate databases.

"All credit cards issued to Camden Pierce under the secondary executive pool have been suspended," Nora reported, not looking up from her screen.

"His primary corporate card was declined approximately four minutes ago at a high-end car service desk inside Teterboro."

"Good," I said, looking out at the bare winter trees lining the Merritt Parkway.

"He can hire an ordinary taxi with whatever cash remains in his personal pocketbook."

"What about the accounts tied to the shell entity in Delaware, the one he labeled 'Aero Logistics Development'?" I asked.

Nora adjusted her glasses, pulling up a encrypted ledger provided by our forensic accountants three days earlier.

"He moved four hundred and eighty thousand dollars into that account last Tuesday," she said softly.

"He believed it was hidden beneath the maintenance write-offs for the fleet's scheduled engine overhauls."

"He didn't realize that every invoice over fifty thousand dollars requires secondary authorization from the trustee office."

I leaned back against the leather seat, closing my eyes as the bitter memories of the last nine years surfaced.

I had met Camden Pierce when my father was dying and the Alden empire was vulnerable to corporate raiders.

He had been handsome, charismatic, and seemingly devoted, offering a steady emotional anchor when my world was collapsing.

My father had warned me from his hospital bed that men who smile too easily rarely have anything solid behind their eyes.

I had dismissed the warning as the paranoia of an aging titan who saw enemies in every shadow.

I had handed Camden the title of CEO of Pierce Aero because I wanted him to feel like my equal, not my consort.

I had built his reputation, introduced him to Wall Street lenders, and allowed him to bask in the glow of my family's legacy.

In return, he had treated my inheritance as an infinite sandbox for his private pleasures and third-rate mistresses.

The town car turned into the long, gated drive of the Greenwich property, the wrought-iron gates opening automatically upon recognizing the transponder.

The estate had been in the Alden family for four generations, a stone manor overlooking sixty acres of pristine woods and shoreline.

As we pulled up to the front entrance, the interior lights were fully illuminated, casting long rectangles of gold across the snow-dusted lawn.

Arthur, my father’s former personal attorney and now my chief legal counsel, was already waiting inside the grand library.

He stood near the roaring fireplace, holding a crystal glass of club soda, surrounded by stacks of Manila folders.

"You pulled the trigger early, Vivian," Arthur said without greeting me, his weathered face etched with deep concern.

"He pushed the timeline forward by bringing her onto the Gulfstream," I answered, shedding my coat and dropping it onto a leather sofa.

"He paraded her in front of my ground crew, Arthur; he allowed her to ask if I was their baggage handler."

Arthur sighed heavily, shaking his head as he set down his glass on the mahogany table.

"The arrogance of a man who has never had to earn his own capital is truly boundless," Arthur muttered.

"Did you secure the digital backups from his office safe at the Manhattan branch?" I asked, walking over to the desk.

Arthur pointed to a silver external drive resting on top of a stack of bank statements.

"We cloned the drives an hour after he boarded the flight out of Boston," Arthur confirmed.

"It is far worse than mere marital infidelity or lavish travel expenses, Vivian."

"Explain," I said, feeling a cold dread settle into the base of my spine.

"Camden has been secretly negotiating with Julian Vance of Apex Global Infrastructure," Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave.

The name hit the room like a sudden drop in cabin pressure.

Julian Vance was a ruthless corporate liquidator who had spent the last five years trying to dismantle Alden Meridian's shipping corridors.

"What did Camden offer him?" I asked, my voice steady despite the fury rising in my chest.

"He offered him the voting proxy for the twenty-two percent share of Pierce Aero that your father left in Camden’s operational trust," Arthur replied.

"Camden promised Vance that he would deliver operational control of the international routes by the end of the fiscal quarter."

"In exchange, Vance agreed to fund an offshore private equity firm under Camden's sole ownership in the Cayman Islands."

"He was planning to gut my family's company from the inside out," I said, the reality of his betrayal crystallizing completely.

"He wasn't just having an affair, Vivian; he was planning to leave you holding the corporate debt while he walked away with eighty million in clean cash."

I picked up the silver drive, feeling its cold metal edges against my fingertips.

"He thinks he is walking into a domestic dispute tomorrow morning," I murmured, staring into the flames of the fireplace.

"He thinks this is about a broken heart, a mistress, and a vintage silk scarf."

"He has no idea that he has handed me the exact rope needed to hang him in federal court."

Nora knocked softly on the library door, holding a wireless phone against her chest.

"It’s Camden’s mother, Eleanor," Nora whispered, looking apologetic.

"She has called three times in the last twenty minutes from her townhouse on the Upper East Side."

"Let it go to voicemail," I commanded without turning around.

"Eleanor knows exactly what her son is; she has spent thirty years covering his debts with other people's money."

"Tonight, the Pierce family learns what happens when the Alden safety net is permanently severed."

I turned back to Arthur, my decision finalized and absolute.

"Draft the emergency petition for the board of directors," I instructed.

"Invoke clause twelve of the corporate charter regarding moral turpitude and breach of fiduciary trust."

"By the time the markets open tomorrow, I want Camden Pierce stripped of every single title he holds."
