Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Plan
I drove home with one thought repeating in my head.
*Replace you.*
It sounded impossible.
But after everything I had learned, impossible was starting to feel normal.
When I arrived, Ethan was sitting at my kitchen table.
The same table where Noah had cried.
The same table where everything started.
He had papers spread out in front of him.
“What did you find?””
He pushed a folder toward me.
“I found these in Vanessa’s storage box.””
I opened it.
Inside were emails.
Printed messages.
Notes.
The first page had a date.
Before the dinner.
Before the custody filing.
Before I knew anything was wrong.
I read the message.
*I think he’s becoming suspicious.*
My hands tightened.
“Who is this to?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Read the next one.””
I did.
*He trusts me. That’s the advantage.*
I felt sick.
“Who was she talking to?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
He pointed.
At the bottom of the page was a name.
A man’s name.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew him.
Marcus.
Vanessa’s old friend.
The man who helped her after her first daughter died.
The man who always told me:
“You’re lucky to have a wife like Vanessa.””
I dropped the paper.
“No.””
Ethan looked serious.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
I turned the page.
The messages continued.
*Marcus: You can’t keep pretending everything is fine.*
*Vanessa: I know. But I need him to look like the problem.*
My chest tightened.
Another message.
*Marcus: Once people believe he’s unstable, custody becomes easier.*
I stopped reading.
The room spun.
This wasn’t just a mother trying to cope.
This was a plan.
A calculated plan.
Ava walked into the kitchen.
“Daddy?””
I quickly closed the folder.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
She held her stuffed rabbit.
“Can I ask something?””
“Of course.””
She looked nervous.
“Are you mad at Mommy?””
I knelt down.
“That’s a grown-up problem.””
She nodded.
Then whispered:
“Because Mommy said if you found out, you would hate her.””
I froze.
“What did she mean?””
Ava hugged the rabbit tighter.
“She said you would leave like everyone else.””
My heart broke.
Because even after everything, Ava was worried about Vanessa.
That was the difference.
My children were hurt.
But they still loved.
I put her to bed.
Then I returned to the kitchen.
Ethan was waiting.
“You need to tell Daniel about Marcus.””
“I will.””
But before I could call, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Marcus.””
My blood ran cold.
“What do you want?””
A pause.
Then:
“I know you found the messages.””
I looked at Ethan.
He heard.
“Where are you?””
Marcus ignored the question.
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
His voice became colder.
“Vanessa didn’t start this plan.””
I felt my grip tighten around the phone.
“What are you talking about?””
“She was following my advice.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Silence.
Then he said:
“Because I knew exactly how to make sure you lost everything.””
The call ended.
And on the table in front of me, another message appeared.
From Marcus.
May you like
One sentence.
*Ask Vanessa who Noah’s real father is.*
