The Chicken She Threw Away / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Father They Tried To Destroy

The words echoed in my head long after the phone call ended.

*Your own wife filed an emergency custody request against you this morning.*

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

I just stood there in the kitchen, staring at Vanessa.

She knew.

The fear in her eyes told me everything.

“You filed it.””

Her lips parted.

“I didn’t want it to happen like this.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t understand how someone could say that after doing exactly what they planned.

“You didn’t want me to find out this way?””

She looked down.

“You were going to leave with the kids.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I was going to protect them.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I’m their mother.””

“And I’m their father.””

The silence between us felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

I already knew who it was.

Her lawyer.

She answered.

“Hello?””

I watched her face change.

At first, she looked confident.

Then confused.

Then nervous.

“Wait… what?””

She turned away from me.

“No, that’s not what happened.””

I couldn’t hear the other side.

But I knew something was wrong.

After thirty seconds, she ended the call.

“What did he say?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“The court wants evidence.””

I stared.

“What?””

“They need proof of your behavior.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What evidence?””

She swallowed.

“My lawyer said the judge will want to know why I believe you’re unsafe.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You don’t have evidence.””

Her silence was enough.

“You don’t have anything.””

She looked away.

And that was when I understood.

This wasn’t about protecting Noah.

This was about winning.

The next morning, I met with my attorney.

His name was Daniel Reeves.

He sat across from me, reviewing everything I brought.

The videos.

The school records.

The counselor’s notes.

Ethan’s statements.

The custody filing.

After nearly an hour, he closed the folder.

“Mr. Carter, I need you to answer one question honestly.””

“What?””

“Did you hit your wife?””

I looked down.

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

I explained everything.

The chicken.

Noah crying.

The trash can.

The moment I lost control.

Daniel leaned back.

“That will be a problem.””

I already knew.

“I know.””

“Because Vanessa’s attorney will use it.””

“I know.””

He studied me.

“But context matters.””

I looked up.

“What do you mean?””

“Did you continue?””

“No.””

“Did you threaten her?””

“No.””

“Did you leave immediately afterward?””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“Then we tell the truth. We don’t hide it.””

I hated hearing that.

But he was right.

That night, I sat with Noah on the couch.

Ava was beside him, coloring.

I watched them for a while.

Then I said:

“Buddy, I need to ask you something.””

He looked up.

“Okay.””

“Did Mommy ever tell you not to tell me things?””

His fingers tightened around the crayon.

“Yes.””

“What things?””

He looked nervous.

“Things that happened.””

“Like what?””

He was quiet for a long time.

Then he whispered:

“She said Daddy would be angry.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“Angry at who?””

“Me.””

I immediately pulled him closer.

“Never.””

He looked at me.

“Never?””

“Never.””

Ava suddenly spoke.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you going away?””

The question hit me.

Because children don’t ask that unless they’re already afraid.

“No.””

“But Mommy said people leave.””

I looked at her.

“When did she say that?””

She shrugged.

“When she was mad.””

I looked away.

Two children.

Two different fears.

Both created by the same person.

Later that night, Ethan came over.

He sat across from me.

“You okay?””

“No.””

He nodded.

“I figured.””

I looked at him.

“I should have noticed.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Destroy yourself because someone else made bad choices.””

I stared at the floor.

“I was gone too much.””

“You were working.””

“I thought I was building a better life.””

Ethan sighed.

“You were. Vanessa just made sure Noah felt alone inside it.””

Then he reached into his bag.

“I found something.””

He handed me a small envelope.

“What is this?””

“Something I should have given you months ago.””

Inside was a letter.

From Noah.

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was messy.

Childlike.

*Dear Daddy,*

*I know you work a lot because you love us. I don’t want you to worry. I will try to be better so Mommy doesn’t get tired.*

My vision blurred.

Then I read the last line.

*I hope one day Mommy likes me again.*

I couldn’t breathe.

Because my son wasn’t asking for toys.

Or vacations.

Or anything expensive.

He was begging to be loved.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

*Emergency hearing scheduled. Tomorrow morning.*

And underneath it:

*Vanessa submitted new evidence.*

I opened the attachment.

A photo.

Of me.

Standing in the kitchen.

The night I slapped her.

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Because beneath the photo was a caption:

*Father with violent tendencies.*
