The Chicken She Threw Away / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8: The Courtroom Of Lies

The courthouse smelled like old paper and cold coffee.

I had always imagined courtrooms as places where the truth won.

That morning, I learned something different.

The truth doesn’t walk in by itself.

Someone has to fight for it.

Vanessa arrived with her attorney.

She looked tired.

Not guilty.

Tired.

That bothered me more.

Because I wanted to see regret.

Instead, I saw someone preparing for war.

Daniel leaned toward me.

“Stay calm.””

“I am calm.””

He looked at me.

“You’re gripping the chair.””

I released my hand.

I hadn’t even noticed.

The hearing began.

Vanessa’s attorney stood first.

“Your Honor, this case concerns the safety of two children.””

I almost laughed.

Two children?

The same children she had hurt?

But I stayed quiet.

He continued.

“My client has concerns about Mr. Carter’s emotional control.””

Then the picture appeared.

The kitchen.

The slap.

The judge looked at me.

“Is this image accurate?””

Daniel stood.

“Yes, Your Honor.””

The room went silent.

He continued.

“My client admits this happened.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

She expected me to deny it.

But lies were how we got here.

I wasn’t going to add more.

Daniel looked at the judge.

“The question is whether this single event tells the entire story.””

The judge nodded.

“Proceed.””

Daniel presented the school records.

The counselor’s report.

The videos.

The timeline.

With every piece of evidence, Vanessa’s story became harder to hold together.

Then her attorney stood.

“Your Honor, these videos were secretly recorded.””

Daniel answered.

“In the family home.””

“But they show a biased interpretation.””

The judge looked at the screen.

“I see a child being denied basic emotional support.””

Vanessa looked down.

For the first time, she looked small.

Then her attorney called his first witness.

Vanessa.

She walked to the stand.

I watched her take the oath.

The woman I once promised forever.

The woman who held Noah when he was born.

The woman now fighting to take him away.

Her attorney asked:

“Mrs. Carter, do you love Noah?””

“Yes.””

“Have you ever intentionally harmed him?””

“No.””

I looked down.

Because technically, she believed that.

That was the terrifying part.

She believed love and harm could exist together.

Her attorney continued.

“Did you ever believe your husband was unstable?””

She hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked toward me.

“Because he becomes emotional.””

The attorney showed the photo again.

“Like this?””

“Yes.””

Then Daniel stood.

“Mrs. Carter, did you tell Noah he wasn’t part of your real family?””

Her face changed.

“No.””

“Did you throw away food he was given?””

“No.””

“Did you tell him not to tell his father about things happening at home?””

She paused.

Only for a second.

But everyone saw it.

“No.””

Daniel walked toward the table.

“Then why does your daughter say you did?””

Vanessa looked angry.

“Ava is five.””

Daniel nodded.

“And Noah is six.””

The courtroom became quiet.

Then he asked:

“Are you saying both children are lying?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The judge watched her carefully.

After a long pause, Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Then who is?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And I saw something change.

Fear.

Not sadness.

Fear.

Because she knew the truth was getting closer.

After the hearing, Daniel stopped me outside.

“We’re not done.””

“What happened?””

He lowered his voice.

“Her attorney requested a psychological evaluation.””

“For me?””

He nodded.

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

“Because they’re trying to prove you’re unstable.””

I looked back at the courtroom doors.

“They’re building a case.””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“For full custody.””

My phone rang.

It was Ethan.

I answered.

“What happened?””

His voice sounded urgent.

“You need to get home.””

“What’s wrong?””

“I found something in Vanessa’s old files.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Something that proves she planned this before the dinner incident.””

My heart started racing.

“What did you find?””

Ethan’s voice lowered.

“Your wife wasn’t trying to protect herself.””

May you like

A long silence.

“She was trying to replace you.””
