Chapter 8 - The Syndicate's Table and the Test of Courage

The grand dining room was a masterpiece of classic,
intimidating architecture,
featuring a massive mahogany table that could easily seat thirty people under the brilliant,
sparkling light of three crystal chandeliers.
I stood nervously near the grand entrance,
smoothing down the elegant,
emerald green evening gown the maid had carefully helped me put on earlier in the evening.
The dress was beautiful,
draping perfectly over my frame while cleverly hiding the bulk of my cast beneath a stylish,
flowing silk shawl that Vincent had personally selected.
I took a deep,
shaky breath,
listening to the low,
powerful hum of deep voices echoing from inside the dining room,
knowing that the most dangerous men in the city were gathered just beyond the heavy wooden doors.
Suddenly,
a warm,
solid hand rested gently on my lower back,
and the rich,
intoxicating scent of Vincent's cologne instantly calmed my racing,
panicked heart.
"You look absolutely breathtaking,
Lena,"
he murmured softly into my ear,
his breath warm against my skin,
sending a beautiful shiver straight down my spine.
I turned my head slightly,
finding him dressed in an immaculate,
tailored black tuxedo that made him look like a dark,
fallen angel,
his presence radiating an aura of absolute,
terrifying control.
"I'm terrified,"
I confessed quietly,
not wanting to hide my weakness from the only man who had ever made me feel truly safe.
Vincent stepped closer,
his hand moving from my back to gently cup my chin,
forcing me to look directly into his dark,
unwavering eyes.
"They are the ones who should be terrified,"
he corrected me smoothly,
his voice carrying a dark,
thrilling promise,
"Because they know that if they even look at you the wrong way,
I will burn their entire empires to the ground."
He offered me his arm,
and I carefully wrapped my good hand around his strong bicep,
letting him lead me confidently through the heavy double doors and into the lion's den.
The moment we stepped into the grand dining room,
the low hum of conversation stopped entirely,
replaced by a heavy,
suffocating silence that felt thick enough to cut with a knife.
Eight incredibly intimidating men sat around the massive table,
all dressed in expensive suits,
their sharp,
calculating eyes instantly snapping toward me with intense,
burning curiosity.
Vincent did not hesitate,
leading me smoothly to the head of the table,
personally pulling out the ornate chair directly to his right,
ignoring the silent shock radiating from his dangerous guests.
I sat down gracefully,
keeping my posture perfectly straight,
desperately channeling the quiet,
unbreakable strength that Vincent constantly told me I possessed.
Vincent took his seat at the very head of the table,
his dark eyes slowly sweeping across the room,
meeting the gaze of every single man present,
silently daring them to question his absolute authority.
"Gentlemen,"
Vincent began smoothly,
his voice calm but completely commanding,
"Allow me to introduce Miss Lena,
she is an honored,
permanent guest in my home,
and she commands the exact same respect that you offer me."
A collective,
barely perceptible nod rippled around the table,
though I could see the intense,
burning questions hiding just behind their carefully masked,
ruthless faces.
The dinner proceeded in a tense,
fascinating atmosphere,
with silent servers bringing out course after course of incredible,
gourmet food that I was far too nervous to actually taste.
The men discussed business in low,
guarded tones,
talking about shipping routes,
real estate acquisitions,
and political influence,
carefully avoiding any direct mention of the violence that surely funded their lavish lifestyles.
I sat quietly,
listening intently,
surprised to find that they did not sound like the chaotic,
screaming monsters my husband used to associate with,
but rather like highly educated,
ruthless corporate executives.
Towards the end of the meal,
a man sitting near the middle of the table,
an older underboss with a scarred face and cold,
dead eyes,
leaned forward slightly,
staring directly at me.
"It is quite unusual for Mr. Moretti to bring a woman to our business meetings,"
the scarred man remarked,
his tone laced with a thin,
disrespectful layer of arrogant skepticism,
"May I ask what family you come from,
Miss Lena."
The entire room froze completely,
the air turning instantly to ice,
as every man at the table held their breath,
waiting to see how the terrifying Boss would react to this subtle,
dangerous insult.
Before Vincent could unleash the violence I saw burning darkly in his eyes,
I found my voice,
a quiet,
steady courage rising unexpectedly from deep within my chest.
"I do not come from a powerful family,"
I answered calmly,
meeting the scarred man's cold gaze without flinching,
without letting the old,
familiar fear control my mind,
"I come from a world where people have to earn their survival every single day,
which is why I understand the value of loyalty far better than most."
A heavy,
stunned silence fell over the dining room,
broken only by the sudden,
deep sound of Vincent letting out a genuine,
proud laugh.
"Well spoken,
Lena,"
Vincent praised smoothly,
leaning back in his chair,
his dark eyes locking onto the scarred man with a terrifying,
lethal promise,
"And let this be the last time anyone at this table ever questions her background,
unless they wish to discuss it with me in the basement."
The scarred man paled instantly,
nodding quickly and looking down at his plate,
the subtle challenge completely,
May you like
utterly crushed by my quiet strength and Vincent's absolute,
terrifying devotion.
