Chapter 13 - The Syndicate's Trap and the Voice of the Queen

The tension hovering heavily inside the grand,

ornate dining room was absolutely palpable,

a thick,

suffocating blanket of unexpressed fear and violent,

dangerous anticipation that settled firmly over the massive mahogany table.

Vincent had called an emergency,

mandatory meeting of his top five captains,

summoning the most ruthless,

powerful men in the city to the secure estate under the innocent,

deceptive guise of a routine quarterly financial review.

I sat perfectly straight in the heavy,

ornate chair located directly to Vincent's right,

dressed impeccably in a sharp,

tailored black suit that matched his own dark,

intimidating attire,

my newly healed arm resting confidently on the polished,

gleaming wooden surface.

Carlo,

the older,

sweating captain responsible for the eastern shipping docks,

sat nervously near the middle of the long table,

his eyes darting quickly,

paranoiacally around the silent,

imposing room,

clearly sensing that something was terribly,

fatally wrong.

"Gentlemen,"

Vincent began smoothly,

his deep,

calm voice echoing effortlessly across the large room,

his hands resting flat on the table,

projecting an aura of absolute,

terrifying control,

"We are here tonight to discuss efficiency,

loyalty,

and the unfortunate,

costly discrepancies that occasionally arise in our complicated business."

He did not look at Carlo,

he did not raise his voice,

but the sheer,

unadulterated lethal intent radiating from his powerful frame made every single hardened criminal at the table hold their collective,

terrified breath.

"Miss Lena has been spending a considerable,

valuable amount of time reviewing the internal,

private ledgers,"

Vincent continued calmly,

turning his head slightly to look directly at me,

a small,

encouraging nod granting me the absolute,

unquestionable floor.

The five dangerous men instantly turned their sharp,

calculating gazes toward me,

their expressions a complex,

guarded mixture of skeptical arrogance and subtle,

nervous apprehension,

wondering what a former waitress could possibly know about their massive,

criminal empire.

I took a slow,

deep breath,

channeling the quiet,

ruthless strength I had found in the underground gymnasium,

and I looked directly into Carlo's wide,

sweating,

panic-stricken eyes.

"In reviewing the eastern dock operations over the last three consecutive months,

I noticed a very fascinating,

impossible mathematical anomaly,"

I stated clearly,

my voice completely steady,

devoid of any hesitation,

ringing brightly with absolute,

cold authority.

"Your documented fuel expenditures have increased by twelve percent,

Carlo,

yet your overall reported cargo tonnage has decreased by eight percent,

a discrepancy that cannot be explained by weather,

tides,

or normal operational delays."

Carlo's face lost all of its color instantly,

turning a sickly,

pale shade of grey,

his trembling hands dropping quickly below the edge of the heavy wooden table,

his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating,

dying fish.

"That is completely absurd,"

Carlo stammered loudly,

his voice cracking violently,

desperately trying to project a false,

hollow outrage,

"It is just a clerical error,

a simple mistake made by the stupid,

incompetent accountants at the harbor office,

I swear on my mother's grave."

"Do not swear on your mother's grave in my house,

Carlo,"

Vincent interrupted softly,

his voice dropping to a low,

deadly whisper that was infinitely more terrifying than a raging,

screaming shout,

"Because you are actively standing directly on the edge of your own."

I reached calmly into the leather folder sitting perfectly in front of me,

pulling out a stack of high-resolution,

time-stamped photographs that Marcus had quietly,

efficiently acquired earlier that very same morning,

sliding them smoothly across the polished table.

The photographs clearly showed Carlo's men loading heavy,

unmarked wooden crates onto the syndicate's private boats under the dark,

concealing cover of midnight,

crates that were completely,

conveniently absent from the official,

documented shipping manifests.

"You are running illegal,

unapproved weapons for the Russian bratva,

using our secure boats,

our expensive fuel,

and our protected routes,"

I concluded coldly,

my eyes never once leaving the broken,

terrified man,

"You are not a victim of a clerical error,

Carlo,

you are a traitor."

The other four captains stared in absolute,

stunned silence at the damning,

irrefutable photographic evidence,

their expressions instantly shifting from arrogant skepticism to pure,

murderous disgust,

instinctively leaning away from Carlo as if he were carrying a highly contagious,

deadly plague.

Carlo abruptly leaped from his chair,

his chair crashing violently backward onto the hardwood floor,

and he desperately reached for the heavy,

loaded pistol hidden clumsily beneath his expensive suit jacket.

Before his trembling fingers could even touch the cold metal grip,

a deafening,

explosive gunshot instantly shattered the tense silence of the dining room,

the loud sound ringing painfully in my sensitive ears.

Carlo froze completely,

a small,

dark red hole appearing suddenly right in the center of his forehead,

his eyes rolling backward into his skull before his heavy,

lifeless body collapsed violently,

face-first,

onto the expensive,

gleaming mahogany table.

I gasped slightly,

my heart hammering violently against my ribs,

turning my head quickly to see Vincent slowly,

calmly lowering his smoking,

silenced pistol,

his face a completely blank,

emotionless mask of pure,

lethal judgment.

"The meeting is officially concluded,

gentlemen,"

Vincent announced smoothly,

standing up gracefully from his chair,

ignoring the spreading pool of dark blood ruining the beautiful,

expensive table,

"Have someone clean up this disgusting,

pathetic mess immediately."

He offered me his warm,

steady hand,

and as I placed my trembling fingers into his massive grip,

I realized that I had just successfully,

May you like

ruthlessly ordered my very first execution in the dark,

beautiful world of shadows.
