Chapter 4 - The Doctor and the Syndicate's Shadows

The grand foyer of the sprawling mansion was breathtakingly beautiful,

decorated with imported marble floors,

crystal chandeliers,

and expensive,

dark mahogany furniture that whispered of generational wealth and absolute power.

However,

I barely had a moment to appreciate the stunning architecture,

because the overwhelming pain in my shattered arm was quickly becoming entirely unbearable.

Dark spots danced violently at the edges of my blurred vision,

my knees buckling weakly as the massive adrenaline rush finally,

completely abandoned my exhausted body.

Before I could hit the cold marble floor,

Vincent caught me effortlessly,

sweeping me up into his strong arms once again,

holding me securely against his chest as he strode quickly down a long,

dimly lit hallway.

"Elias,"

Vincent shouted forcefully,

his booming voice echoing loudly against the high ceilings,

completely lacking his usual,

calm composure.

A set of heavy double doors burst open at the end of the corridor,

and an older,

sharp-looking man with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses rushed out,

carrying a large,

metallic medical case.

"Bring her into the trauma room,

Boss,"

Elias ordered briskly,

not showing even a single ounce of fear or hesitation when speaking to the most dangerous man in the city.

Vincent carried me into a brilliantly lit,

sterile white room,

gently laying me down on a soft,

padded medical examination table located directly in the center.

"Her left arm is severely broken,

radius and ulna both fractured,

and she has a minor laceration above her right eyebrow,"

Vincent reported quickly,

rattling off my severe injuries with the cold,

calculated precision of a seasoned combat veteran.

Elias moved swiftly,

putting on sterile blue gloves,

his sharp eyes assessing my pale,

sweating face with professional,

calm efficiency.

"I am going to have to reset the bone before I cast it,

Miss Lena,"

Elias said gently,

preparing a syringe filled with a clear,

potent liquid,

"This will help tremendously with the pain,

but the setting process will still hurt significantly."

I nodded weakly,

my teeth chattering uncontrollably from the deep,

freezing shock,

tears welling up quickly in the corners of my tired eyes.

I felt a sharp,

quick pinch in my right shoulder,

and almost instantly,

a warm,

heavy sensation began spreading rapidly through my freezing veins,

dulling the sharp edges of my overwhelming agony.

"Hold her perfectly still,"

Elias instructed quietly,

positioning his hands carefully over my brutally twisted,

swollen left arm.

Vincent stepped completely up to the table,

leaning over me,

his massive hands gently but firmly holding my trembling shoulders down against the soft padding.

"Look strictly at me,"

Vincent commanded softly,

his dark,

intense eyes locking onto mine,

completely blocking out the terrifying sight of the doctor preparing to snap my bone back into place.

"Do not close your eyes,

Lena,

just focus entirely on my face."

I stared deeply into his dark,

bottomless eyes,

finding a strange,

unexplainable comfort in the violent,

dangerous depths hidden just beneath his calm surface.

Then,

the doctor violently twisted my broken arm.

A blinding,

white-hot explosion of pure agony ripped completely through my entire body,

and I let out a loud,

piercing scream,

my nails digging desperately into the expensive fabric of Vincent's dark suit.

"I've got you,"

Vincent murmured continuously,

his face inches from mine,

his steady,

calm voice becoming the only anchor keeping me from drowning completely in the sea of pain,

"It's over,

the worst part is completely over."

Slowly,

the blinding pain began to heavily recede,

replaced by a deep,

dull,

throbbing ache as Elias rapidly wrapped a heavy,

plaster cast tightly around my stabilized arm.

I was panting heavily,

tears streaming silently down my pale cheeks,

my entire body slick with cold,

clammy sweat.

Vincent gently pulled a soft tissue from a nearby silver dispenser,

carefully wiping the wet tears away from my face,

his touch impossibly soft for a man who ordered brutal executions daily.

As my breathing slowly returned to a normal,

steady rhythm,

I noticed the three silent men from the diner had quietly entered the sterile room,

standing like massive stone gargoyles near the closed doorway.

They were huge,

covered heavily in dark,

intimidating tattoos,

and heavily armed,

yet they watched me with an odd,

unexpected look of quiet,

respectful concern.

"These are my shadows,"

Vincent explained softly,

noticing my nervous,

flickering gaze,

gesturing vaguely toward the huge,

silent men.

"Marcus,

Leo,

and Dante,

they will ensure absolutely nothing ever harms you again."

The three dangerous men offered small,

synchronised nods of deep respect,

their massive presence surprisingly reassuring rather than terrifying.

"Why are you treating me like royalty,"

I asked sleepily,

the heavy painkillers finally dragging my exhausted mind down into a deep,

inescapable fog.

Vincent leaned in extremely close,

his lips gently brushing against my uninjured temple,

a silent,

powerful promise sealing my terrifying,

beautiful new fate.

"Because from this exact moment forward,

you are mine to protect,"

he whispered darkly,

May you like

and as my heavy eyes finally closed,

I realized I felt truly safe for the very first time.
