Chapter 6 - The Cold Awakening

The sterile smell of antiseptic woke me,
cutting through the lingering fog of painkillers and exhaustion,
pulling me back to a world I wasn't sure I wanted to face.
I opened my eyes slowly,
blinking against the harsh,
fluorescent light that illuminated the sprawling hospital suite,
a room that looked more like a luxury penthouse than a medical facility.
The steady,
reassuring beep of the fetal monitor was the first sound that truly registered,
a rhythmic confirmation that the tiny life inside me had survived the nightmare.
My hand instinctively flew to my stomach,
resting protectively over the small bump,
feeling the faint,
butterfly flutters of my child moving within.
Tears,
hot and unbidden,
spilled down my cheeks,
a mixture of profound relief and lingering,
sharp sorrow.
I turned my head slightly,
wincing as the bruises on my face throbbed in protest,
and saw my father sitting in a leather armchair beside my bed.
He looked older,
more tired than I had ever seen him,
the lines around his eyes etched deeper by the stress of the past forty-eight hours.
His tailored suit was gone,
replaced by a simple black sweater,
but the aura of absolute authority remained,
a silent promise that I was safe,
impenetrably safe.
"You're awake,"
he said softly,
his voice a low rumble,
setting aside the tablet he had been reading.
He leaned forward,
his large hand covering mine,
his touch surprisingly gentle for a man who could order the destruction of a city.
"The doctors say you and the baby are stable,"
he assured me,
"but you need rest,"
"lots of rest,"
"and zero stress."
I nodded weakly,
my throat dry and raspy,
struggling to find the right words to say,
to explain why I had hidden in the shadows for so long.
"Dad, I..."
I started,
my voice breaking,
the guilt washing over me in a suffocating wave.
"Hush,"
he interrupted gently,
squeezing my hand,
"we will talk about the past when you are stronger."
"Right now, your only job is to heal,"
he declared,
his eyes locking onto mine with fierce determination.
"I am taking care of everything else,"
he added,
a dark,
dangerous glint appearing in his eyes,
a look that meant someone was about to suffer terribly.
I wanted to ask about Carter,
to know what had happened after the helicopter whisked me away,
but I was terrified of the answer,
terrified of the monster I had married.
"Where are they?"
I finally whispered,
the question hanging in the air,
heavy and unavoidable.
My father's expression hardened,
the gentle father vanishing,
replaced by the ruthless general,
the architect of empires.
"They are exactly where they belong,"
he replied coldly,
"in a state of absolute,
irreversible ruin."
"Carter's firm is gone,"
he stated factually,
"his partners turned on him the moment they smelled blood in the water."
"The embezzlement charges,"
my father continued,
a grim smile playing on his lips,
"the ones my team uncovered in his private files,"
"they are quite extensive."
"He is currently in a holding cell,"
my father finished,
"denied bail,"
"awaiting a trial that he cannot possibly win."
I closed my eyes,
May you like
letting the reality of the situation sink in,
the sheer scale of my father's vengeance leaving me breathless.
