Chapter 20 - The Unbreakable Empire

One year later,
the warm,
golden sunlight of a perfect spring morning bathed the massive,
sprawling grounds of the Sterling estate in a beautiful,
tranquil glow.
The air was incredibly fresh,
filled with the sweet,
fragrant scent of blooming jasmine and vibrant,
colorful roses that climbed the ancient,
heavy stone walls of the fortress.
I stood on the wide,
wrap-around wooden porch of the main house,
holding a steaming,
delicate porcelain cup of Earl Grey tea,
watching the absolute,
unfiltered joy unfolding on the massive lawn before me.
Julian,
now a brilliant,
incredibly energetic six-year-old boy,
was sprinting wildly across the perfectly manicured grass,
laughing hysterically as a massive,
fluffy golden retriever chased eagerly after him.
My father,
Arthur Sterling,
the terrifying titan who had single-handedly crushed empires and destroyed monsters,
was currently sitting on a plaid picnic blanket,
smiling warmly as he expertly assembled a high-tech,
intricate model airplane for his beloved grandson.
The dark,
violent shadows of the past had finally,
and completely,
receded,
leaving behind a profound,
unshakable peace that settled deeply into my bones.
Carter Davis was gone forever,
locked away in a subterranean black site,
his name entirely erased from the public record,
a forgotten ghost screaming silently in the absolute dark.
Eleanor Davis remained heavily medicated in her padded,
secure cell,
her arrogant,
venomous mind completely broken,
living in a delusional nightmare where she was still the queen of high society.
And Julian Vance,
the mastermind who had foolishly tried to challenge the terrifying might of the Sterling family,
was currently serving six consecutive life sentences in a federal supermax facility,
his massive wealth completely redistributed to various,
global charitable organizations under my father's strict,
unforgiving direction.
I took a slow,
deep breath of the fresh spring air,
feeling the warm,
comforting sunlight kiss my cheeks,
realizing just how far I had truly come.
I was no longer the terrified,
abused wife bleeding on a cold kitchen floor in Virginia,
desperately hiding my true identity because I was afraid of the overwhelming,
heavy burden of power.
I had learned the hardest,
most brutal lesson of all,
the same lesson my father had tried to teach me so many years ago.
Power is not inherently evil,
and strength is not something to be feared,
it is a necessary,
vital shield that protects the innocent from the cruel,
relentless monsters that hide in the dark corners of the world.
My father stood up from the picnic blanket,
brushing the grass off his casually elegant,
tan trousers,
and walked slowly toward the porch to stand beside me.
He looked down at Julian,
who was currently tackling the giant dog in a fit of uncontrollable,
pure laughter,
and a deep,
abiding softness filled my father's sharp,
calculating eyes.
"He is perfectly happy,"
my father noted softly,
his voice a gentle,
reassuring rumble that always made me feel completely,
impenetrably safe.
"He is safe, Dad,"
I replied warmly,
leaning my head gently against his strong,
broad shoulder,
"and he will always know exactly who he is,"
"and exactly where he comes from."
"He is a Sterling,"
my father agreed proudly,
wrapping a heavy,
protective arm around my shoulders,
pulling me close into his warm embrace.
"And no one,"
my father promised fiercely,
his eyes scanning the incredibly secure,
heavily guarded perimeter of our massive,
unbreakable fortress,
"will ever dare to break our silence again."
The war was truly over,
the enemies were entirely vanquished,
and the hidden empire stood tall,
unconquered,
May you like
and forever united in absolute,
unwavering love.
