Chapter 14 - The Ambush On The Highway

The discovery of the corrupted gardener was only the very beginning of a massive,
highly coordinated assault on our seemingly impenetrable fortress.
By the next morning,
the world outside our heavy stone walls had absolutely exploded into a chaotic,
media-fueled frenzy of scandalous,
fabricated lies.
Julian Vance,
operating from the dark shadows,
had utilized his limitless,
illicit wealth to launch a devastating,
nationwide smear campaign against the Sterling family empire.
Every major news network,
every trashy tabloid magazine,
and every aggressive online blog was suddenly running explosive,
sensational headlines about Arthur Sterling's alleged,
horrific crimes.
They claimed that my father was a corrupt,
ruthless warlord,
who had illegally,
and violently,
imprisoned his innocent son-in-law,
Carter Davis,
on completely fabricated,
baseless charges.
The vicious articles falsely painted Carter as a tragic,
heartbroken victim,
a loving father who was violently ripped away from his pregnant wife by a tyrannical,
power-hungry billionaire.
"This is an absolute outrage,"
my father's lead attorney shouted,
pacing frantically across the expensive Persian rug in my father's massive,
oak-paneled study.
"They are flooding the courts with frivolous,
aggressive lawsuits,"
the lawyer panicked,
"they are demanding Carter's immediate release,"
"and they have filed a massive,
emergency petition for full,
sole custody of Julian!"
I sat on the leather sofa,
my hands trembling uncontrollably as I read the vicious,
hateful comments directed at me on the internet,
feeling the walls closing in around us once again.
"They can't take my son,"
I whispered desperately,
tears welling up in my eyes,
"Carter is a monster,"
"he beat me,"
"he nearly killed Julian before he was even born!"
My father stood perfectly still by the large,
panoramic window,
staring out at the heavily guarded perimeter,
his jaw clenched so tightly that a muscle ticked furiously in his cheek.
"They are trying to distract us,"
my father stated coldly,
his brilliant,
tactical mind already analyzing the enemy's complex,
multi-layered strategy.
"The media circus is merely a smokescreen,"
he deduced accurately,
"a loud,
obnoxious diversion meant to force us into making a stupid,
panicked mistake."
Unfortunately,
despite my father's incredible foresight,
a critical,
unavoidable situation arose that forced us to temporarily leave the absolute safety of the estate.
Julian had developed a sudden,
severe allergic reaction to a bee sting,
his small throat swelling rapidly,
requiring an immediate,
emergency visit to our private,
specialized pediatric facility located in the city center.
We mobilized our heavily armored,
three-car tactical convoy,
with Julian and I secured in the reinforced,
bulletproof back seat of the central,
black SUV.
My father rode in the lead vehicle,
personally commanding his elite,
highly trained security team,
his face grim,
expecting the absolute worst.
As the convoy sped down the slick,
rain-swept highway,
the tension inside the vehicle was incredibly thick,
suffocating,
and terrifyingly heavy.
Suddenly,
without any warning,
a massive,
eighteen-wheel commercial transport truck violently swerved across three lanes of traffic,
intentionally slamming its massive weight into the lead SUV.
The horrific sound of crunching metal and shattering glass filled the air,
as the lead vehicle was violently pushed into the concrete median,
sparks flying in a terrifying,
fiery display.
Simultaneously,
two heavily modified,
black tactical vans slammed on their brakes directly in front of our central SUV,
creating an impassable,
deadly roadblock on the highway.
Our driver slammed on the brakes,
the heavy,
armored SUV skidding wildly across the wet asphalt,
stopping just inches away from the terrifying blockade.
"Ambush!"
our driver screamed into his radio,
drawing his heavy,
automatic weapon,
his eyes scanning the incredibly dangerous,
rapidly unfolding situation.
The rear doors of the tactical vans swung open forcefully,
and a dozen heavily armed,
masked mercenaries poured out onto the highway,
raising their high-powered assault rifles,
aiming directly at our vehicle.
I screamed in absolute terror,
throwing my body over Julian,
pressing his small,
trembling frame down into the floorboards,
praying to God that the bulletproof glass would hold.
The mercenaries opened fire,
a deafening,
relentless hail of armor-piercing bullets striking the windshield,
leaving massive,
spider-web cracks in the reinforced,
thick glass.
"Mommy, I'm scared!"
Julian cried out,
clinging tightly to my shirt,
his small face buried in my chest,
completely terrified by the horrific,
deafening noise.
"I have you, baby,"
I sobbed,
closing my eyes tightly,
"I will never let them take you,"
"I will die before I let them touch you."
Outside the vehicle,
the world erupted into an absolute,
deadly warzone,
May you like
as the hidden empire of the Sterling family prepared to unleash its true,
terrifying wrath upon the foolish attackers.
