Chapter 19 - The Ghosts Of The Past

The luxurious,

sprawling penthouse was entirely silent,

save for the heavy,

rhythmic breathing of the armed operatives,

and the terrifying,

howling wind blowing in through the shattered,

smoking doorway.

Julian Vance lowered his empty hands slowly,

the gold-plated weapon remaining untouched inside his suit jacket,

his sharp mind finally accepting the bitter,

devastating reality of his absolute defeat.

"Thirty years, Arthur,"

Vance whispered,

his voice filled with a toxic,

poisonous mixture of profound hatred and undeniable,

grudging respect.

"For thirty years, I have meticulously built my empire in the dark shadows,"

Vance sneered,

"waiting for the perfect,

calculated moment to strike you down,"

"to take back what you violently stole from me in the desert."

My father walked slowly toward the massive,

obsidian desk,

his posture relaxed,

yet radiating an overwhelming,

lethal energy that made the heavily armed operatives stand even taller.

"I did not steal anything from you in the desert, Julian,"

my father corrected coldly,

his eyes locking onto Vance's with a terrifying,

unblinking intensity.

"You were a corrupt,

cowardly traitor who tried to sell our tactical positions to the highest bidder,"

my father growled,

the memories of their shared,

bloody military past briefly flashing in his dark eyes.

"I simply stripped you of your command,"

"and left you to rot exactly where you belonged."

Vance's face twisted into an ugly,

venomous scowl,

the carefully maintained mask of a cultured billionaire completely slipping away,

revealing the desperate,

ruthless warlord hiding underneath.

"And now you think you have finally won?"

Vance spat,

gesturing wildly to the heavily armed men surrounding him in his ruined penthouse.

"You think you can just march into my home and execute me?"

Vance mocked,

"The federal authorities will investigate,"

"they will find the bodies,"

"and your precious,

pristine reputation will be completely destroyed."

My father actually laughed,

a deep,

chilling sound that echoed loudly across the massive room,

making Vance instinctively take a small,

terrified step backward.

"Execute you?"

my father asked smoothly,

shaking his head in mock,

exaggerated disappointment,

"Julian,

I am a civilized businessman,"

"I do not execute people in their own homes."

My father reached into the inner pocket of his immaculate suit,

pulling out a thick,

heavy flash drive,

and tossed it casually onto the massive,

polished surface of the obsidian desk.

"That drive contains irrefutable,

perfectly documented evidence of your direct involvement in global terrorism,"

my father explained,

his voice dropping to a terrifying,

lethal whisper.

"It contains the exact,

untraceable wire transfers you used to fund the mercenaries who attacked my daughter and my grandson on the highway."

Vance stared at the small,

innocuous flash drive as if it were a highly venomous,

coiled snake ready to strike.

"In exactly ten minutes,"

my father continued,

glancing briefly at the expensive,

custom-made watch on his wrist,

"three heavily armed,

federal tactical response teams will breach the ground floor of this building."

"The director of the FBI,"

my father added with a cold,

predatory smile,

"who happens to be a very close,

personal friend of mine,"

"will personally oversee your immediate,

violent arrest for domestic terrorism and high treason."

Vance gasped,

his arrogant,

venomous pride finally breaking,

as the crushing weight of a lifetime spent in a maximum-security federal supermax prison crashed down upon his shoulders.

"You cannot do this to me,"

Vance pleaded desperately,

his voice cracking,

the powerful billionaire reduced to a terrified,

whimpering coward in a matter of seconds.

"I will give you everything,"

Vance bargained frantically,

"take the offshore accounts,"

"take the real estate,"

"just let me walk out of this building tonight,

and you will never,

ever see my face again."

My father stepped incredibly close to Vance,

invading his personal space,

the sheer,

overwhelming aura of a four-star general completely crushing the broken man.

"You tried to harm my grandson,"

my father whispered,

his voice colder than the deepest,

darkest reaches of outer space,

"which means you do not get to make a deal,"

"and you do not get to walk away."

"You are going to spend the rest of your miserable,

pathetic life locked in a dark,

concrete box,"

my father promised softly,

"and every single time you close your eyes,"

"you will remember exactly who put you there."

My father turned his back on the completely broken,

weeping billionaire,

walking slowly toward the shattered doorway,

signaling his elite operatives to immediately withdraw from the penthouse.

As they rode the private,

glass elevator down toward the waiting armored convoy in the basement,

the massive,

wailing sirens of the approaching federal tactical teams echoed loudly through the stormy city streets.

The wrath of the hidden empire had been fully,

and devastatingly,

unleashed,

and Julian Vance's reign of terror was permanently,

May you like

and violently,

extinguished.
