Chapter 7 - THE STOLEN DANCE AND THE WHISPERED SECRET

The string quartet playing classical arrangements in the corner of the grand ballroom swelled into a smooth,

romantic waltz.

The crowd thinned slightly as couples drifted onto the polished marble dance floor.

Alexander turned to me,

his gray eyes catching the golden glow of the crystal chandeliers.

“Dance with me,

Eve,

” he requested softly,

extending his hand.

I looked down at his large,

capable palm.

“I’m not very graceful at formal dances,

” I hesitated.

“You cried on a Brioni suit in front of hundreds of people at JFK,

” he reminded me with a low,

teasing chuckle.

“I think you can handle a simple waltz.

”

Defeated by his logic,

I placed my hand in his.

He pulled me smoothly into his arms,

his hand resting firmly on the small of my back.

The contact sent a jolt of electricity straight up my spine.

He moved with surprising lightness for a man of his imposing stature.

As we glided across the floor,

the rest of the crowded room seemed to melt away into a distant blur.

There was only the steady rhythm of the music,

the faint scent of his cedarwood cologne,

and the intense,

unwavering focus of his gaze.

“You’re quiet tonight,

” Alexander noted,

his voice vibrating against my chest as we spun.

“I’m just processing everything,

” I confessed honestly,

looking up into his face.

I was being dumped via voicemail while holding a single suitcase.

Tonight,

I’m dancing with the most powerful man in Boston at a charity gala.

It feels surreal.

”

“Life changes in an instant,

Eve,

” he murmured,

his grip tightening imperceptibly around my waist.

“Sometimes it takes a catastrophic collapse to clear away what was rotting beneath the surface,

making room for something real.

”

“Is that what happened to you?

” I asked gently,

sensing a hidden depth beneath his armor.

“Years ago,

” he replied quietly,

his jaw tightening just a fraction.

“I built an empire because I thought control could protect me from pain.

I was wrong.

Pain comes whether you invite it or not.

The only thing that matters is who is standing beside you when the storm hits.

”

His words hung in the warm air between us,

heavy with unspoken emotion.

I didn't answer,

but I leaned in just a fraction closer,

May you like

resting my head lightly against his shoulder—

the exact same shoulder I had stained with tears just seven days prior.
