Chapter 16 - THE BOARDROOM TRIUMPH
Two hours later,
I walked back into the tenth-floor conference room—not as a nervous candidate,
but as Alexander Sterling's equal partner in corporate strategy.
The junior executives and board members seated around the mahogany table turned their heads in unison.
This time,
there was no skepticism in their eyes.
Only deep,
abiding respect after the Marcus scandal.
Alexander walked in right behind me,
his imposing presence commanding absolute silence in the room.
He took his seat at the head of the table,
while I took the seat directly to his right.
“Today,
” Alexander began,
his deep voice carrying effortless authority across the room,
“we finalize the acquisition of the German tech firm,
securing Sterling Capital’s dominance in European markets for the next decade.
”
He turned his head slightly,
looking directly at me.
“Miss Vance will lead the final financial breakdown.
”
I stood up calmly,
projecting my voice with absolute confidence as I clicked through the presentation slides.
Every number was airtight.
Every risk assessment was meticulously bulletproof.
I spoke with the authority of someone who no longer needed validation from a toxic ex-boyfriend to know her own worth.
When I delivered my final summary,
the entire board broke into spontaneous applause.
Even older conservative directors nodded approvingly,
raising their pads in unanimous agreement.
Alexander didn't applaud.
Instead,
he sat back in his chair with his hands folded over his chest,
watching me with an expression of profound pride and undisguised adoration.
When the meeting adjourned and the executives filed out of the room,
the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind the last departing board member.
We were finally alone.
Alexander stood up slowly,
walked around the mahogany table,
and stopped right beside my chair.
“You were magnificent,
” he said quietly,
pulling me up into his arms.
“I told you I knew what I was doing,
” I whispered against his chest,
wrapping my arms around his neck.
“You exceeded every expectation I ever had,
May you like
” he murmured before capturing my lips in a deep,
triumphant kiss.
