Chapter 6 - The Forensic Audit and a Shattered Empire

The morning sun rose over the Boston skyline, but inside the luxury suite of the Four Seasons, the atmosphere was as cold as a morgue.

Vincent Moretti had not slept a single minute since returning from the university auditorium.

He stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, nursing a glass of dark amber whiskey that he did not actually want to drink.

His head of security, a ruthless and efficient man named Marcus, walked into the room carrying a thick leather binder.

Marcus placed the binder on the glass coffee table with a heavy, definitive thud that made Sophia flinch from across the room.

Vincent slowly turned around, his piercing blue eyes completely devoid of the warmth he usually reserved for his family.

He walked over to the table and flipped the binder open.

The documents inside detailed exactly eighteen years of offshore transfers, fake shell corporations, and forged signatures.

Every single month, the twenty thousand dollars meant to keep Claire and his firstborn son safe had been systematically drained into an account in the Cayman Islands.

Sophia had not just intercepted the money; she had actively stolen millions from a child who was living in poverty.

Vincent felt physically sick as he looked at the meticulously organized spreadsheets proving her undeniable guilt.

He thought about Claire standing in the hallway, wearing a cheap, clearance-rack dress, talking about scrubbing floors and skipping meals.

He thought about the brilliant, fierce young man who had achieved the absolute highest academic honors while wearing a rented tuxedo.

Vincent closed the binder slowly and looked up at his wife.

Sophia was sitting on the edge of the sofa, her face pale, her hands trembling as she tried to compose a defense.

"Vincent, please, you have to understand the pressure I was under," she pleaded, her voice cracking with desperation.

"I wanted to secure Ethan’s future, I needed to make sure she could never use that money to stage a comeback and destroy our family."

Vincent walked toward her, his footsteps eerily silent on the thick carpet.

"You destroyed this family the moment you decided to play God with my wealth and my bloodline," he said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

"You let my son freeze in cheap apartments while you wore diamond necklaces bought with my company's profits."

Ethan walked out of his bedroom just in time to hear the final, devastating sentence.

The eighteen-year-old heir looked at his mother, his expression twisting from confusion into profound disgust.

"Mom, is it true?" Ethan asked, his voice shaking.

"Did you steal from that boy's family so we could live like this?"

Sophia covered her face with her hands, sobbing uncontrollably, unable to look her own son in the eye.

Vincent turned to Marcus, his jaw set like granite.

"Freeze every single one of Sophia's personal accounts, cancel her corporate cards, and revoke her security clearance at the Moretti building."

Sophia gasped, dropping her hands to stare at her husband in sheer terror.

"You can't do that, I am the vice president of acquisitions!" she screamed.

"You were," Vincent corrected her coldly.

"As of this second, you are nothing but a massive liability to my empire."

Vincent walked past her and headed toward the front door of the suite.

"Where are you going?" Ethan asked, looking completely lost in the wreckage of his privileged life.

"I have an eighteen-year debt to pay," Vincent replied softly.

"And I am going to beg for forgiveness from a woman who has every right to watch me burn."
