Chapter 10 - A Fragile Bridge

Weeks passed, and the brutal autumn air settled over the Harvard campus.

Noah had thrown himself entirely into his complex engineering coursework, determined to ignore the chaotic drama of the billionaire world.

He was currently competing for a highly coveted research position at the university's advanced robotics laboratory.

When the acceptance email finally arrived in his inbox, he felt a massive surge of pure, unadulterated triumph.

He immediately called his mother, who wept with joy over the phone, incredibly proud of his relentless dedication.

However, his joy was abruptly shattered the next morning when he walked into the laboratory for his orientation.

The head professor shook his hand enthusiastically and handed him a glossy welcome packet.

"We are so thrilled to have you, Mr. Bennett," the professor beamed.

"Especially since the new Moretti Endowment has fully funded this entire robotics program for the next ten years."

Noah froze, the glossy packet suddenly feeling like a burning brick in his hands.

He immediately turned around, marched out of the laboratory, and hailed a taxi straight to the towering Moretti headquarters in downtown Boston.

He bypassed the bewildered receptionists, ignored the frantic security guards, and barged directly into Vincent's massive corner office.

Vincent looked up from his paperwork, genuinely surprised to see his estranged son standing in his doorway.

"Did you really think I wouldn't find out?" Noah yelled, slamming the glossy packet onto Vincent's immaculate glass desk.

"You bought the entire laboratory just to hand me an internship?"

Vincent slowly stood up, keeping his hands calmly on his desk.

"I didn't buy the laboratory to hand you anything, Noah," Vincent said quietly.

"I funded that department because their equipment was painfully outdated, and brilliant minds like yours deserve the best tools to change the world."

"Stop trying to manipulate my life!" Noah fired back, his blue eyes blazing with furious resentment.

"I want to earn my place, I don't want your shadow hanging over every single thing I accomplish."

Vincent walked around the desk, stopping a few feet away from the fiercely independent young man.

"I am not trying to cast a shadow, son," Vincent said, his voice thick with raw emotion.

"I am trying to clear the rocks out of your path."

Vincent took a deep breath, looking deeply into Noah's eyes.

"For eighteen years, Sophia placed massive boulders in your way, and you still managed to climb completely over them."

He gestured to the sprawling city skyline visible through the massive windows.

"You don't need my money, and you clearly don't need my help to succeed."

Vincent looked back at Noah, a sad, resigned smile touching his lips.

"But as your father, it is my absolute duty to make sure nobody ever stands in your way again."

Noah stared at the powerful billionaire, the fiery anger in his chest slowly giving way to a complicated, heavy confusion.

He saw the genuine exhaustion in Vincent's eyes, the deep regret carving lines into his face.

"Don't call yourself my father," Noah said, but the aggressive venom was noticeably missing from his voice.

"I know I haven't earned that title," Vincent agreed softly.

"But I am going to spend the rest of my life trying to earn a place in your life, even if it's just as a friend."

Noah looked at the welcome packet on the desk, then looked back at Vincent.

He didn't scream, he didn't storm out, and he didn't throw the packet in the trash.

He simply picked it up, turned around, and walked toward the heavy oak door.

"I expect you to stay out of my laboratory," Noah said over his shoulder, a tiny hint of a truce in his tone.

Vincent smiled for the first time in weeks.

May you like

"Understood," the billionaire replied.

It was a very small, incredibly fragile bridge, but for the first time in eighteen years, they were finally standing on the same side.
