Chapter 3 - The Paperwork of Retribution

By mid-afternoon,

the legal storm surrounding the Whitmore family had intensified into a full-scale hurricane.

Inside Eleanor Vance's private conference room,

stacks of financial records,

property deeds,

and bank statements were spread across the central table.

Natalie sat beside me,

handing me a glass of water with a straw so I wouldn't have to stretch my split lip.

"The police have Madison in custody at the county jail,"

Eleanor announced,

walking into the room with a fresh set of legal filings.

"Bail has been set high due to the severity of the facial trauma documented in your medical chart."

"Ryan tried to post bail immediately,"

"but the judge issued a temporary hold based on our emergency motion."

"What about the bank accounts?"

I asked,

my voice steadying as the swelling around my jaw slowly began to settle under the ice pack.

Eleanor smiled thin,

razor-sharp smile.

"We caught them completely off guard."

"At eleven fifteen this morning,"

"the court granted our emergency order freezing all joint financial assets."

"Ryan’s personal accounts,"

"the joint investment portfolio,"

"and the credit lines connected to your name are completely locked."

"He cannot spend a single dollar without court authorization."

"He must be furious,"

Natalie said,

a quiet smirk playing on her lips.

"Furious does not begin to cover it,"

Eleanor replied.

"His corporate attorney called my office ten minutes ago,"

"screaming that Ryan needs access to those funds to pay Madison’s legal defense team."

"I told him to file a formal request with the judge,"

"which will take at least three weeks to be reviewed."

She pulled out a blue document tabbed with bright yellow sticky notes.

"Now,"

"let's talk about the Whitmore family business."

"For three years,"

"you served as the chief operational administrator for their real estate holding firm,"

"correct?"

"Yes,"

I said,

nodding slowly.

"I managed the client accounts,"

"handled the payroll,"

"and oversaw the commercial lease agreements."

"Did Ryan pay you a standard executive salary?"

Eleanor asked,

her eyes narrowing.

"No,"

I replied flatly.

"Ryan and Evelyn said that because I was 'family,'"

"my compensation was built into our shared lifestyle."

"They gave me a modest allowance,"

"while Ryan drew a six-figure salary."

"And who was listed as the primary signatory on the master operational accounts?"

Eleanor pressed.

I looked down at my hands.

"I was."

"When Ryan formed the commercial logistics subsidiary two years ago,"

"he didn't want the tax liability under his personal name."

"He made me the sole corporate officer and managing director."

"He thought it was just administrative paperwork."

Eleanor leaned forward,

placing her palms flat on the glass table.

"Which means,"

"Claire,"

"you don't just hold half of his personal assets."

"You legally own the master operating entity of their entire commercial property empire."

"Without your signature,"

"they cannot collect rent,"

"they cannot pay their commercial mortgages,"

"and they cannot execute new tenant leases."

"Ryan thought he was keeping you trapped under his thumb by limiting your personal money."

May you like

"In reality,"

"he handed you the keys to his entire family legacy."
