Chapter 14 - The Unanimous Verdict

Three days later,
after nine hours of intense deliberation,
the red light above the courtroom door flashed,
signaling that the jury had reached a verdict.
The room was packed so tightly that spectators stood lined along the back walls.
The air inside was thick with tension,
every breath held in anticipation.
Ryan Whitmore and Madison Whitmore stood at the defense table,
dressed in grey prison uniforms,
their hands chained at their waists.
Ryan looked hollowed out,
his face gaunt,
his eyes staring blankly at the polished wooden floor.
Madison wept silently,
her body shivering uncontrollably.
I sat at the prosecution table beside Eleanor Vance and Natalie,
my spinal column straight,
my chin held high,
surrounded by an aura of unshakable peace.
"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?"
Judge Sterling asked,
her authoritative voice breaking the silence.
"We have, Your Honor,"
the jury foreperson replied,
standing up and holding a stack of official court forms.
"Pass the verdict sheets to the clerk,"
Judge Sterling ordered.
The bailiff took the documents and handed them to the judge.
Judge Sterling reviewed each page slowly,
her face unreadable,
before handing them back to the clerk to be read aloud into the permanent record.
"In the matter of State vs. Madison Whitmore,"
the clerk began,
his voice echoing clearly,
"on Count One,"
"felony domestic assault with intent to cause severe bodily harm,"
"we find the defendant... GUILTY."
Madison let out a loud,
piercing shriek and collapsed into her chair,
her head slamming against the table.
"On Count Two,"
"criminal conspiracy to commit physical violence,"
"we find the defendant... GUILTY."
"In the matter of State vs. Ryan Whitmore,"
the clerk continued,
turning to the second document,
"on Count One,"
"complicity in felony domestic assault,"
"we find the defendant... GUILTY."
"On Count Two,"
"witness intimidation and obstruction of justice,"
"we find the defendant... GUILTY."
"On Count Three,"
"grand corporate embezzlement,"
"we find the defendant... GUILTY."
"On Count Four,"
"wire fraud and forgery,"
"we find the defendant... GUILTY."
Guilty.
Guilty.
Guilty.
The word repeated over and over like the rhythmic strike of an iron hammer.
Ryan’s knees buckled beneath him,
and he fell heavily onto the carpeted floor,
his chained hands striking the legs of his chair.
His defense attorney tried to pull him up,
but Ryan simply lay there,
sobbing uncontrollably,
his arrogant spirit completely shattered.
I closed my eyes for three long seconds,
taking a deep,
restorative breath.
The pain,
the trauma,
the humiliation,
and the fear that had defined the last three years of my life vanished,
replaced by a profound,
unyielding sense of victory.
I opened my eyes,
looked back at the jury,
and offered them a single,
May you like
quiet nod of gratitude.
Justice had finally arrived.
