Chapter 2 - When the Police Knock

The morning sun hit the sprawling manicured lawn of the Whitmore estate in suburban Columbus.

Inside the stone mansion,

Evelyn Whitmore paced back and forth across the imported marble foyer,

a porcelain teacup trembling in her hand.

Ryan sat on the edge of the plush velvet sofa,

staring blankly at his phone.

"She’s playing games,"

Evelyn snapped,

her voice shrill with irritation.

"Claire is trying to embarrass this family."

"She ran away to some minor medical office just to draw attention."

"I told you,"

"Ryan,"

"you should have handled her months ago."

"She has always been ungrateful."

"Mom,"

Ryan muttered,

rubbing his temples,

"she isn't answering my calls."

"The hospital wouldn't give me her room number."

"They said she was transferred."

"They cited privacy laws."

"Privacy laws?"

Evelyn scoffed,

setting her teacup down on the antique mahogany side table with a sharp clatter.

"She is your wife."

"She has no right to keep secrets from you."

"Madison was completely within her rights to put her in her place."

"Claire was disrespectful."

"She refused to clean up the boxes."

"She talked back to Madison in my house."

"She brought this on herself."

"That’s exactly what I told her,"

Ryan said,

staring at the dark screen of his phone.

"I sent her a text saying she brought it on herself."

"I told her to stop acting like a victim."

Before Evelyn could respond,

the heavy brass knocker on the front door echoed through the grand foyer.

Three loud,

measured thuds.

Evelyn adjusted her designer sweater,

smoothing down the front.

"That will be the florist,"

she muttered,

walking toward the entrance.

"Or perhaps the caterer for Sunday's luncheon."

She pulled open the massive oak door.

Standing on the covered porch were two uniformed officers from the Columbus Metropolitan Police Department,

accompanied by a plainclothes detective holding a leather binder.

"Evelyn Whitmore?"

the detective asked,

his voice flat and professional.

"Yes,"

Evelyn replied,

her chin tilting upward in conditioned arrogance.

"May I ask what this intrusion is about?"

"We are executing an arrest warrant for Madison Whitmore,"

the detective stated calmly,

stepping past the threshold.

Evelyn gasped,

her hand flying to her throat.

"An arrest warrant?"

"Are you out of your mind?"

"Do you have any idea who my husband is?"

"Do you know our family name in this city?"

"We know who you are, ma'am,"

the officer replied,

unclipping a set of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"We also have a signed warrant for felony assault,"

"inflicting grievous bodily harm,"

"and domestic violence."

Ryan rushed into the foyer,

his face pale,

his phone slipping from his grip onto the rug.

"Wait!"

Ryan shouted,

his voice cracking.

"There's been a misunderstanding!"

"It was just a small family dispute!"

"Claire fell!"

"She tripped over a table!"

The detective pulled out a tablet screen and turned it toward Ryan.

Displayed on the screen was a crystal-clear photograph taken at the trauma center.

It showed the deep,

crescent-shaped laceration above my left eye,

the purple bruising around my neck where Madison had grabbed my collar,

and the timestamp from the ER intake.

"Your wife gave a sworn statement,"

the detective said coldly.

"The medical staff documented defense wounds on her forearms."

"And we have logged every single text message sent from your number,"

"Ryan Whitmore,"

"including the message where you acknowledged the assault and told her she deserved it."

"That is evidence of an attempt to cover up a felony crime."

From the top of the stairs,

Madison appeared in her silk pajamas,

her eyes wide with sudden terror.

"Mom?"

Madison squeaked,

looking at the police officers.

"What's going on?"

"Madison Whitmore,"

the detective called out,

moving toward the staircase.

May you like

"You are under arrest."

"Put your hands behind your back."
