Chapter 19 - Ashes into Foundation

Six months later,
a soft spring breeze blew across the rolling hills outside Columbus,
carrying the scent of fresh rain and blooming cherry blossoms.
I stood at the edge of the property that had once housed the Whitmore estate.
The grand stone mansion,
with its imposing iron gates and marble pillars,
was completely gone.
Demolition crews had torn down the structure three months prior,
clearing away the physical reminders of a dark,
corrupt past.
In its place stood the wooden framework of a magnificent new building.
Architectural banners hung along the construction perimeter,
displaying bright 3D renderings of the new complex:
The Claire Carter Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Center.
Natalie stood beside me,
wearing a hard hat and holding a set of blue architectural blueprints.
"The foundation poured last week,"
Natalie said,
her face beaming with pride.
"The medical wing will be completed by August,"
"and the emergency housing shelter will open in October."
"We already have thirty full-time social workers,"
"therapists,"
"and legal aid advocates signed on to staff the facility."
I walked up the concrete walkway,
stopping at the exact spot where the grand staircase had once stood.
This was the place where I had laid bleeding on the floor,
looking up at Ryan as he stood by and watched.
This was the place where my heart had broken,
and where my fight had begun.
I pressed my hand against the sturdy new wooden frame of the entrance.
The cold,
cruel mansion was gone.
In its place stood a haven of healing,
a place where women who had been broken,
silenced,
and abused could find safety,
strength,
and justice.
"Are you ready for the groundbreaking ceremony?"
Natalie asked gently,
pointing toward the crowd of reporters,
community leaders,
and supporters gathering near the podium.
"Yes,"
I said,
taking a deep,
May you like
filling breath of clean air.
"I am ready."
