Chapter 9: The Woman Who Came Back

Daniel pressed the phone to his ear.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then:

“Rebecca.””

Lily grabbed my arm.

I could feel her shaking.

Daniel walked toward the window.

His voice lowered.

“You shouldn’t have called.””

My heart raced.

Because those words meant one thing.

He knew she was alive.

He knew where she was.

And he had hidden it.

Lily stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

Daniel turned.

“No.””

The word came too quickly.

Too desperately.

Lily’s expression changed.

“Give me the phone.””

“Lily—”

“Give it to me!””

The entire office went silent.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

And for the first time, he looked like he didn’t recognize her.

Because the girl who used to believe every word he said was gone.

Slowly, he lowered the phone.

“Rebecca?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Soft.

Shaking.

“Is Lily there?””

Lily covered her mouth.

She knew.

She knew immediately.

Because some bonds survive distance.

Some bonds survive time.

Some bonds survive lies.

“Mom?””

The word escaped before she could stop it.

The voice on the phone went silent.

Then came a sob.

“Oh my God.””

Lily started crying.

I stepped back.

This was their moment.

“Lily?””

“Yes.””

“My baby.””

That was all it took.

Lily broke.

She cried the way children cry when they have been holding pain for too long.

“I thought you left me.””

Rebecca’s voice shattered.

“Never.””

“Dad said—”

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

“I do.””

A pause.

“I tried to find you.””

Lily closed her eyes.

“Why didn’t you?””

“I did.””

The answer came immediately.

“I tried every year.””

Daniel looked away.

Lily noticed.

“Where were you?””

Rebecca was quiet.

Then:

“Ask your father.””

The room became cold.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Lily turned.

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“You’ve controlled everything long enough.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

“Yes, I do.””

She looked at the phone.

“I’m finally listening.””

For the next ten minutes, Rebecca told the story.

The story Daniel never wanted Lily to hear.

After the adoption, Rebecca had moved away because she believed Daniel would keep his promise.

A promise that Lily would know she was loved.

But Daniel changed.

He told Rebecca she was unstable.

He threatened legal action.

He warned her that if she contacted Lily, he would make sure she lost any chance of seeing her.

“So you disappeared?”” Lily asked.

Rebecca cried.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Lily looked down.

“And all this time…”

“I was watching from far away.””

“Why?””

“Because I needed to know you were okay.””

Lily wiped her face.

“Were you?””

A small laugh came through the phone.

“Your mother was.””

The words stunned her.

Your mother.

Not biological mother.

Not birth mother.

Mother.

“I saw your graduation pictures,” Rebecca whispered.

Lily froze.

“What?””

“I was there.””

The room went silent.

“You were?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Across the field.””

My heart tightened.

The graduation.

The day Lily pushed me away.

The day Rebecca watched.

“I saw you with Emily.””

Lily looked at me.

Rebecca continued.

“And I saw how she looked at you.””

My eyes filled.

“She loved you.””

Lily squeezed my hand.

“She raised me.””

“Yes.””

Rebecca’s voice softened.

“She did what I hoped someone would do.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because Rebecca wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t jealous.

She was grateful.

Then Daniel suddenly grabbed the phone.

“That’s enough.””

Lily stood.

“No.””

Daniel’s face was angry now.

The calm was gone.

“You have no idea what you’re risking.””

Lily stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at her.

Then at me.

“You really want the truth?””

“Yes.””

His jaw tightened.

“Fine.””

He threw the phone onto the desk.

“Your mother didn’t leave because of me.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel continued:

“She left because she knew what she did.””

Lily went pale.

“What?””

I felt the shift immediately.

The old Daniel.

The man who always had another story.

Another excuse.

Another person to blame.

He smiled slightly.

“She never told you everything.””

Rebecca’s voice came faintly from the phone.

“Daniel, don’t.””

Lily looked down at the phone.

“Mom?””

Silence.

Then Rebecca whispered:

“I was going to tell you.””

My heart stopped.

Tell her what?

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Ask her why she gave you away.””

Lily stared.

“Mom?””

No one spoke.

Then Rebecca finally answered.

And her words changed everything.

“Because I was dying.””

Lily froze.

“What?””

Rebecca’s voice trembled.

“And I knew if I stayed…”

A pause.

“I would leave you twice.””

The room went completely silent.

Then Rebecca said the words that made Lily collapse into my arms.

“But Daniel never told you the rest.””

I held Lily.

“Rest?””

Rebecca whispered:

“He wasn’t protecting you.””

A pause.

“He was protecting the secret that he caused my illness.””

Daniel’s face changed.

And I knew.

May you like

Whatever happened next…

would destroy the last lie he had left.
