Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Papers

For almost a minute, neither Lily nor I moved.

The kitchen clock ticked loudly above us.

A sound so ordinary.

So harmless.

Yet somehow, it felt like the entire room was waiting for an answer.

I stared at the document in my hands.

The paper was old.

The edges were slightly yellow.

Someone had kept this secret for a long time.

A secret that involved my daughter.

Because even though Lily was not biologically mine, that was the word I had used in my heart for eleven years.

My daughter.

I traced the unfamiliar name at the bottom of the page.

*Rebecca Hartwell.*

I had never heard it before.

Not once.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Lily.

Not from anyone.

“Mom?”” Lily whispered.

I looked up.

She was watching me carefully.

Not like an angry teenager.

Not like someone demanding answers.

Like a scared child.

“What does this mean?””

I placed the papers on the table.

“I don’t know yet.””

Her eyebrows pulled together.

“But you knew something?””

The question hurt.

Because there was a time when Lily believed I knew everything.

Where her favorite sweater was.

Where her missing homework was.

Where the cookies were hidden.

But this?

I had no idea.

“No,” I said softly.

“I didn’t.””

She sat down across from me.

“Then why is your name on some of these papers?””

I picked up the adoption agreement.

My name was there.

The signature I remembered making with shaking hands.

The day I promised a little girl that she would never feel unwanted.

“I helped finalize the adoption.””

“You adopted me?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled.

“But Dad told me…”

She stopped.

I waited.

“What did he tell you?””

She looked down.

“He said you were just the woman he married after everything happened.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

Just the woman.

After everything happened.

Eleven years of raising her reduced to a sentence.

“Lily,” I said carefully, “what did Daniel tell you about your biological mother?””

Her face changed.

Like she had been asked something she never expected.

“She left.””

“When?””

“When I was a baby.””

“Did he ever tell you why?””

She shook her head.

“He said she didn’t want me.””

The words hung between us.

I looked at her.

And suddenly, I understood.

The cruelest thing Daniel had done wasn’t disappearing.

It wasn’t failing to help.

It wasn’t letting Lily believe I was temporary.

The cruelest thing was that he had built a story where she was the one who had been abandoned.

And he had made her believe it.

“Lily,” I said, “I think your father lied to you.””

Her face went pale.

“No.””

“I think he hid things.””

“No.””

Her voice became louder.

“You don’t know that.””

“I know he kept these papers from you.””

She looked at the documents.

Then away.

“My whole life is fake?””

“No.””

I reached across the table.

She pulled her hand back.

The small movement hurt more than I expected.

“Not everything,” I said.

She swallowed.

“Then what is real?””

I wanted to answer immediately.

I wanted to say:

Me.

The nights I stayed awake.

The birthdays.

The scraped knees.

The first day of school.

The college applications.

The love.

But I knew she needed more than my words.

She needed the truth.

“I’m going to find out.””

That night, I called the only person who might know.

Daniel’s older sister, Karen.

We had not spoken in years.

Not since Daniel and I divorced.

She had always defended him.

Always found excuses.

But she had also been the person who brought baby Lily to my apartment the first time.

The person who watched me fall in love with a child who needed someone.

When she answered, her voice was surprised.

“Emily?””

I closed my eyes.

She was one of the few people who still called me by my first name instead of “Lily’s mom.””

“Karen, I need to ask you something.””

A pause.

“Is this about Daniel?””

“Yes.””

Another pause.

Longer.

“What did he do?””

The question surprised me.

Not because she asked.

Because of how quickly she asked.

“Who is Rebecca Hartwell?””

Silence.

Complete silence.

Then Karen whispered:

“Oh no.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You know that name.””

“Emily…”

“Who is she?””

Karen exhaled.

“I thought Daniel destroyed those records.””

My heart started pounding.

“What records?””

“Lily’s original adoption file.””

I stood up.

“What are you talking about?””

Karen lowered her voice.

“Rebecca was Lily’s biological mother.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

The way she said it made my stomach drop.

“No, Emily. You don’t.””

I waited.

Karen continued.

“Rebecca didn’t abandon Lily.””

The room spun slightly.

“What?””

“She was sick.””

I couldn’t speak.

“She had a condition. She knew she wasn’t going to be able to raise Lily.””

My fingers went cold.

“She chose adoption because she wanted Lily safe.””

I sat down slowly.

“Daniel told Lily she left?””

Karen didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

The silence was enough.

“He told everyone Rebecca ran away,” Karen finally said.

I covered my mouth.

All these years.

All these years Lily had carried the pain of being unwanted.

And it was built on a lie.

“Why?””

Karen’s voice broke.

“Because Daniel didn’t want anyone asking questions.””

“What questions?””

A long pause.

Then she said:

“The questions about why Rebecca disappeared.””

I looked at the papers again.

The handwritten note.

The warning.

The hidden name.

“What happened to her?””

Karen was quiet.

Then she said:

“Emily, there’s something else you need to know.””

“What?””

“Rebecca didn’t die before the adoption.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She was alive.””

The room went silent.

“Where is she?””

Karen whispered:

“I don’t know.””

I closed my eyes.

“Karen.””

“She disappeared after signing the adoption papers.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Karen said something that made every piece of the puzzle fall into place.

“Because Daniel threatened her.””
