Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Lie

Daniel sounded calm.

Too calm.

That was what scared me.

Anger was predictable.

Anger meant someone was losing control.

Calm meant someone was planning.

“Where did you get my number?”” I asked.

A quiet laugh.

“Emily, I’ve had your number for eleven years.””

My grip tightened.

“What do you want?””

“You know exactly what I want.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

His voice hardened slightly.

“You’re going to stop digging.””

I looked at the photograph on the table.

Rebecca holding Lily.

A mother and daughter separated by a lie.

“No.””

The silence on the other end was immediate.

“You should think carefully.””

“I already have.””

“About Lily?””

“Yes.””

“She’s confused.””

“She deserves the truth.””

“She deserves stability.””

I laughed quietly.

“Is that what you call lying to her entire life?””

His breathing changed.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

Silence.

For the first time, he hesitated.

And that told me everything.

“You were always good at making yourself the hero,” I said.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

I looked at the photograph.

“I spent eleven years cleaning up the damage you caused.””

“You think you know everything?””

“I know enough.””

He lowered his voice.

“Rebecca was dangerous.””

“Then why are you afraid of her?””

Silence.

That hit.

I knew it did.

Because people who are telling the truth don’t fear questions.

They fear answers.

“Where is she?”” I asked.

“No idea.””

“Liar.””

His voice sharpened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“Maybe.””

I looked toward the street.

“But it’s my mistake to make.””

After I hung up, I sat there for a long time.

Because despite everything…

I was afraid.

Not of Daniel.

Of losing Lily again.

Because now I knew something painful.

The truth could bring people together.

But it could also destroy what remained.

That evening, Lily came home.

She looked exhausted.

“I talked to Dad again.””

I looked up.

“What happened?””

“He admitted some things.””

My heart tightened.

“Like what?””

She sat down.

“He said Rebecca wanted to give me up.””

I waited.

“But he said he didn’t tell me because he didn’t want me to hate him.””

I almost smiled.

Almost.

“That sounds convenient.””

“I know.””

Her eyes filled.

“I think I spent my whole life defending someone who didn’t deserve it.””

I reached for her hand.

This time, she let me.

“I’m sorry.””

“I know.””

“No, Mom.””

She looked at me.

“I’m really sorry.””

I squeezed her fingers.

“I know.””

That night, we went through every document together.

Every hidden detail.

Every missing piece.

Then Lily found something.

A small address written in the corner of one paper.

She looked at it.

“Mom.””

“What?””

“I think this is where Rebecca lived.””

My heart started racing.

“Are you sure?””

She nodded.

“This handwriting matches the letter.””

We looked at each other.

After eleven years…

We might finally find her.

The next morning, we drove to the address.

It was an old apartment building on the other side of town.

The paint was peeling.

The hallway smelled like dust and old wood.

Lily held my hand as we climbed the stairs.

Not because she was a child.

Because she was scared.

Apartment 3B.

I knocked.

Nothing.

I knocked again.

Still nothing.

Then a neighbor opened the door across the hall.

“Can I help you?””

I turned.

“We’re looking for Rebecca Hartwell.””

The woman froze.

“Rebecca?””

“Yes.””

Her expression changed.

“You’re related?””

I looked at Lily.

Then back at her.

“Yes.””

The woman stepped closer.

“She’s been waiting.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“She left this years ago.””

She disappeared into her apartment.

When she returned, she held a small box.

“This was for Lily.””

My hands shook.

“For my daughter?””

The woman nodded.

“Rebecca said someone would come one day.””

Lily started crying.

“What’s inside?””

The woman handed it to her.

“She said not to open it unless you were with the person who raised you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

The person who raised you.

Not the person who gave birth to you.

The person who stayed.

Lily slowly opened the box.

Inside was a letter.

A key.

And one final photograph.

But the moment Lily saw the photograph, her face went completely pale.

Because standing beside Rebecca in that picture…

was Daniel.

May you like

And written on the back were six words.

*The day he tried to take you.*
