Chapter 8: The Witness Nobody Expected
The woman standing beside Lauren was my aunt Rebecca.
My mother’s older sister.
The person who had attended every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every family gathering.
The person who had always told me:
“Family protects family.””
But now she was sitting beside Lauren.
With a folder.
And an expression that looked like regret.
I stared at her.
“Aunt Rebecca?””
She looked down.
“I know this is difficult.””
James stepped slightly in front of me.
Not aggressively.
Just enough.
A quiet reminder that I wasn’t facing this alone.
Lauren noticed.
And smiled.
“You see? This is exactly what I mean.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“You always let him speak for you.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
After everything.
After creating documents.
After trying to question my ability as a mother.
She was still blaming James.
I looked directly at her.
“I’m standing here because I chose to.””
For the first time, Lauren looked uncomfortable.
The family services representative, a woman named Melissa, opened her folder.
“Let’s focus on the information presented.””
She looked at Lauren.
“You submitted concerns regarding Mrs. Walker’s parenting.””
Lauren nodded.
“Yes.””
Melissa turned toward me.
“And you dispute these claims?””
“Yes.””
My voice was steady.
“Because they aren’t true.””
Melissa looked between us.
“Mrs. Lauren has provided several statements.””
Lauren smiled slightly.
Of course she had.
Then Melissa continued.
“However, some information appears to conflict with other evidence.””
Lauren’s smile faded.
“What do you mean?””
Melissa pulled out a document.
“The dates on several statements do not match the dates of the attached photographs.””
Silence.
Lauren looked at Rebecca.
Then back at Melissa.
“That’s impossible.””
Melissa continued.
“The photographs appear to have been taken at different times than when they were presented.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
James looked at Lauren.
“You altered the timeline.””
Lauren shook her head.
“No.””
But her confidence was gone.
Aunt Rebecca finally spoke.
“Lauren.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I told you this would go too far.””
Lauren’s face changed.
“What?””
Rebecca looked ashamed.
“I thought you were just trying to scare them.””
My stomach dropped.
“What are you talking about?””
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“She asked me to help her.””
James’s expression hardened.
“Help her do what?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words hurt.
Because they meant she knew.
“She wanted me to say that you had been struggling after Emma was born.””
I felt numb.
“Why?””
Rebecca swallowed.
“She said if people believed you were overwhelmed, it would be easier to convince them that Emma needed more family involvement.””
Lauren stood suddenly.
“That’s not what I said.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“Yes, it was.””
The room went silent.
For the first time, Lauren had lost control of the story.
Melissa closed her folder.
“Mrs. Lauren, we will need clarification regarding these inconsistencies.””
Lauren looked around.
At Rebecca.
At the documents.
At everyone who had finally stopped protecting her.
Then she looked at me.
And the expression on her face wasn’t anger anymore.
It was desperation.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.””
I held Emma’s photo in my hand.
“What I’ve done?””
Lauren stepped closer.
“You think this is about jealousy?””
James immediately moved.
“Stay where you are.””
Lauren stopped.
Then she whispered:
“You don’t know why I did any of this.””
I stared at her.
“Then tell me.””
Her eyes moved toward James.
And what she said next changed everything.
“Ask your husband what happened the night before he left for deployment.””
James froze.
I looked at him.

And for the first time since this nightmare began…
He looked afraid.
