Chapter 4: The Envelope Nobody Was Supposed to Find
James didn’t speak for almost ten seconds.
That scared me more than if he had immediately explained.
Because James was never speechless.
Not during emergencies.
Not during difficult conversations.
Not even when doctors told us Emma had complications during delivery.
But now he was sitting beside me, staring at the floor.
“James?””
He looked up.
“I was hoping you’d never have to know about this.””
My stomach tightened.
“What is it?””
He glanced toward Emma’s crib.
“She found something she wasn’t supposed to see.””
I stood up.
“What envelope?””
James took a slow breath.
“When I came home from deployment, I noticed some documents were missing from my office.””
My eyebrows lifted.
“Missing?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t want to accuse anyone without proof.””
The room felt smaller.
“James, who had access to our house?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
And that was answer enough.
“Lauren?””
He nodded.
My chest tightened.
“When did she come over?””
“While you were at the pediatrician.””
I remembered that day.
I had asked Lauren to stop by and pick up some clothes Emma had outgrown.
She had been in our house alone.
“I trusted her.””
“I know.””
His voice softened.
“And that’s why I didn’t want to believe it either.””
I sat down slowly.
“What was in the envelope?””
James looked toward the hallway.
Then he stood.
“Wait here.””
A minute later, he returned holding a small brown envelope.
My heart started pounding.
“Is that it?””
He nodded.
“I kept a copy.””
He placed it on the table.
I looked at the handwriting.
My name.
James’s name.
Emma’s name.
“What is this?””
“It’s our updated family trust.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“After Emma was born, I wanted to make sure everything was protected.””
He opened the envelope carefully.
“It includes her future. Education. Medical expenses. Security.””
I understood.
Then I remembered my mother’s words.
Lauren asked about the will.
My hands curled into fists.
“She knew.””
James nodded.
“She knew Emma would be included.””
A painful realization settled over me.
My sister wasn’t upset because she hated babies.
She wasn’t upset because I was a different person.
She was upset because my daughter represented something Lauren could never control.
A future she couldn’t take.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from my father.
“Your sister is coming over tomorrow. Please don’t make this worse.””
I stared at the screen.
Then I showed James.
His expression hardened slightly.
“She’s coming here?””
I nodded.
“Apparently.””
James leaned back.
“What does your father expect?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I already knew.
He expected me to forgive.
To forget.
To keep peace.
The same thing my family had always expected from me.
The next morning, my parents arrived at our house before Lauren.
My father looked uncomfortable the moment he walked through the door.
My mother kept wringing her hands.
I held Emma while James stood beside me.
Nobody spoke for a moment.
Then my father cleared his throat.
“We need to talk.””
I looked at him.
“About what?””
He glanced at Emma.
Then away.
“About your sister.””
I almost laughed.
“Of course.””
My mother stepped forward.
“She made a mistake.””
I stared at her.
“A mistake?””
“She knows she was wrong.””
“Then why hasn’t she apologized?””
Neither of them answered.
That silence told me everything.
Then the front door opened.
Lauren walked in.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t apologetic.
She looked confident.
Almost relieved.
Like she believed she had come to fix a small misunderstanding.
She looked at James.
Then at me.
Then at Emma.
“I think everyone needs to calm down,” she said.
James stepped forward.
“No.””
Lauren raised an eyebrow.
“No?””
James’s voice stayed controlled.
“No more excuses.””
For the first time, Lauren’s confidence slipped.
Then she reached into her purse.
And pulled out a document.
“I guess it’s time you all knew the truth.””
She placed it on the table.
My eyes moved to the top line.
And my entire body went cold.
Because the document had my name on it.
May you like
But it wasn’t about me.
It was about Emma.
