Chapter 6: The Truth James Kept Hidden

I had spent years believing James was the one person who never kept things from me.

He was honest.

Steady.

Predictable in the best way.

But now I was sitting across from him, holding our daughter, wondering how much I didn’t know.

“What did you find?””

James didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he walked to his office.

When he returned, he carried a folder.

A thick one.

He placed it on the coffee table.

“I started looking into it after something happened while I was deployed.””

I stared at the folder.

“What happened?””

James sat beside me.

“Before I left, I noticed Lauren asking questions.””

“About what?””

“About our finances.””

I frowned.

“She asked about money?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew I had life insurance. She knew I had benefits. She knew Emma would be protected if anything happened to me.””

My stomach tightened.

“But why would she care?””

James opened the folder.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Notes.

My hands went cold.

“Where did you get these?””

“Some were from accounts she left public. Others were from conversations people sent me after they became uncomfortable.””

I looked down.

The first message was from Lauren to someone I didn’t recognize.

It said:

“She got everything handed to her.””

I kept reading.

Another message:

“She has no idea how lucky she is.””

Then:

“People like her don’t understand what they have until it’s gone.””

I looked up.

“She was talking about me?””

James nodded.

“She’s been comparing herself to you for years.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t explain Emma.””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“It doesn’t.””

He turned another page.

“She became worse after we announced the pregnancy.””

I remembered.

The comments.

The small insults.

The way Lauren would laugh whenever I talked about becoming a mother.

“She told me I wouldn’t know what I was doing.””

James nodded.

“She told other people too.””

I felt exhausted.

Not angry anymore.

Just tired.

“How long did you know?””

James looked down.

“I suspected something.””

“Since when?””

“Since the day she came over when you were at the doctor.””

I froze.

“The day she took that picture?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

James hesitated.

Then he showed me another image.

A security camera screenshot.

My house.

My front door.

Lauren walking inside.

My breath caught.

“She wasn’t supposed to be there that long.””

“What?””

“She stayed after you left.””

I stared at the image.

“How long?””

“Almost forty minutes.””

I looked at him.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I didn’t have proof she did anything.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“But you knew something was wrong.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His face changed.

Because for the first time, he looked guilty.

“Because I was afraid.””

That surprised me.

James Walker was afraid of almost nothing.

“Of what?””

He looked at Emma.

“I was afraid of making you choose between your sister and me.””

I swallowed.

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

The honesty in his voice hurt.

Because he was right.

I had spent years defending Lauren.

Making excuses for her.

Ignoring things because she was family.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But James looked at the screen.

“Answer it.””

I picked up.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Is this Mrs. Walker?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Rachel Collins. I work with a legal office.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Why are you calling me?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“Because your sister recently contacted us regarding custody arrangements for your daughter.””

I stopped breathing.

James immediately stood.

“What did she say?””

The woman continued.

“She claimed there were concerns about your ability to parent.””

I closed my eyes.

Lauren hadn’t just been angry.

She had been planning.

Then Rachel said the sentence that changed everything.

“But there’s something important you need to know.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What?””

Her voice lowered.

“The documents your sister submitted included evidence that appears to have been altered.””

I looked at James.

His face went completely still.

“Altered how?””

The woman hesitated.

“Someone changed the dates.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

A long silence.

Then she answered:

“To make it appear that your husband had known about these concerns before Emma was born.””

I felt the room spin.

Because Lauren wasn’t just trying to hurt me.

She was trying to rewrite our entire story.

And somehow, she had found a way to make James look like part of it.
