Chapter 13: Beneath the Blue Lantern
The sound of the diner door unlocking echoed through the underground chamber.
Victor's face hardened.
"He's here.""
Elijah nodded.
"Bell won't leave without the money.""
Victor glanced at Daniel, who was pale but conscious.
"Can you walk?""
Daniel pushed himself upright.
"Can.""
I stepped toward my son.
"Then we're all going.""
Victor looked at me.
"Grandma, the building could be dangerous.""
"I don't care.""
Elijah reached for my hand.
His fingers trembled.
"You shouldn't be doing this.""
I looked at him.
"I lost forty years with you.""
My voice broke.
"I am not spending another minute sitting somewhere safe.""
He stared at me.
Then he squeezed my hand.
"All right.""
Victor led us through a second passage that opened behind the old courthouse.
The rain had eased.
The town looked strangely peaceful.
Streetlights reflected off the wet pavement.
Nobody would have guessed that half the people involved in my life had been hiding a criminal empire beneath a roadside diner.
Victor's crew split up.
Mason and two others took the rear road.
The rest circled around the diner.
Victor looked at Elijah.
"How do we know where Bell will go?""
Elijah pointed toward the diner.
"Basement.""
"What exactly is down there?""
"A vault.""
I stared at him.
"I've owned that basement for forty-three years.""
"I know.""
"And I never saw a vault.""
Elijah smiled sadly.
"That's because it was built behind the foundation.""
Daniel spoke from behind us.
"Bell had the plans changed during construction.""
I turned.
"You knew?""
"I suspected.""
"Suspected?""
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I couldn't risk searching while they were watching you.""
Victor looked between them.
"How do we get inside?""
Elijah reached into his pocket.
He removed a small silver key.
"This.""
I recognized it.
The second half of the pendant.
Victor touched his own.
"That's not a key.""
Elijah shook his head.
"Not exactly.""
He pressed the pendant into a slot beneath the diner’s service-door handle.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The wall shifted.
I stared.
"All these years...""
Elijah gave me a faint smile.
"They built the diner around it.""
We entered.
The diner was dark.
Chairs were upside down on tables.
The neon Blue Lantern sign flickered through the windows.
A glass on the counter trembled slightly.
I knew that sound.
Someone was moving downstairs.
Victor raised a hand.
Everybody stopped.
Then we heard footsteps.
One.
Two.
Three.
A metal door slammed.
Elijah whispered:
"He's opening the vault.""
Victor looked at Mason.
"Now.""
The bikers moved silently.
Mason went through the kitchen.
Victor and Elijah took the basement stairs.
I followed Daniel.
At the bottom, the hidden door stood open.
Inside was a room I had never known existed.
Shelves covered the walls.
Boxes were stacked to the ceiling.
Documents filled metal cabinets.
And in the center stood a massive steel safe.
Bell was there.
Calvin stood beside him.
Marlene was tied to a chair.
Bell turned.
He looked at me.
"I knew you'd come.""
Victor stepped forward.
"You've got nowhere to go.""
Bell smiled.
"You really believe this ends with guns?""
Elijah moved beside Victor.
Bell's smile disappeared.
"Elijah.""
My son stared at him.
"You took thirty-nine years from me.""
"I kept you alive.""
"You kept me hidden.""
"There is a difference.""
"No.""
Elijah's voice shook.
"You stole my name. You stole my son. You stole my mother.""
Bell glanced at me.
"Your mother made her own choices.""
I stepped forward.
"You drugged me.""
"No.""
Marlene suddenly screamed.
"He ordered it!""
Bell looked furious.
"Marlene.""
She shook her head.
"I'm done protecting you.""
Bell laughed.
"Protecting me?""
"You threatened my children.""
"You are alive because of me.""
"And I hate you for it.""
Calvin looked nervous.
He whispered, "Maybe we should go.""
Bell turned toward him.
"Open the safe.""
Calvin stared.
"I don't have the code.""
Bell looked at me.
"She does.""
Every eye in the room turned toward me.
I felt something shift in my memory.
A number.
A room.
A rainy night.
Elijah as a young man.
Daniel placing his hand over mine.
My sister crying.
I whispered the number.
"Seven... four... two... nine.""
Calvin's mouth dropped open.
Bell smiled.
"Excellent.""
He entered the code.
The safe clicked.
Inside were stacks of cash.
Jewelry.
Passports.
And hundreds of files.
But Bell didn't reach for the money.
He reached for one small red folder.
Elijah stepped forward.
"No.""
Bell grabbed it.
"This is what I came for.""
Victor raised his weapon.
"Put it down.""
Bell laughed.
"Do you know what this contains?""
Elijah's face turned white.
"Victor, don't let him open it.""
Bell held the folder up.
"The original ownership records.""
He looked at me.
"The proof that Evelyn transferred the diner willingly.""
My stomach sank.
"No.""
Bell opened it.
Inside was a document bearing my signature.
Victor stepped closer.
"Forged.""
Bell shook his head.
"Original.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"No.""
Bell smiled.
"Your wife signed it herself.""
I stared at the paper.
A strange memory surfaced.
Me sitting at a table.
Daniel beside me.
Mr. Bell across from us.
A pen in my hand.
The room spinning.
I heard my own voice.
"What am I signing?""
And Daniel whispering:
"Trust me.""
I looked at him.
"You did this.""
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"I did.""
The room went silent.
Victor turned toward him.
"You told me she was drugged.""
Daniel shook his head.
"She wasn't drugged that night.""
My heart shattered.
"Then why don't I remember?""
Daniel stepped toward me.
"Because I asked you to forget.""
I backed away.
"What?""
He whispered:
"I had a doctor erase pieces of your memory.""
Victor's expression became murderous.
"Why?""
Daniel pointed at the red folder.
"Because the signature wasn't the only thing in there.""
Bell suddenly slammed the folder shut.
Elijah lunged.
Calvin blocked him.
Victor moved.
The room exploded into chaos.
A gunshot rang out.
The overhead light shattered.
Darkness swallowed the vault.
Then I heard Daniel scream.
And Bell shouted:
"Take the old woman!""
Strong hands grabbed me from behind.
A cloth covered my mouth.
May you like
The last thing I saw was Victor fighting through the darkness.
Then everything went black.
