Chapter 12: The Man Behind Marlene

The man behind Marlene stepped into the light.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

Thin smile.

Mr. Bell.

But not the older Mr. Bell from my memories.

This man was younger.

Fitter.

And somehow more frightening.

Calvin turned toward him.

"You're late.""

Bell raised the gun.

"I'm exactly on time.""

Marlene trembled.

"You said nobody would get hurt.""

Bell looked at her.

"I lied.""

He shoved her down the stairs.

Victor caught her before she hit the concrete.

"What are you doing?"" Marlene gasped.

Bell laughed.

"Cleaning up.""

Calvin backed away.

"You said you'd protect me.""

"I said you'd be useful.""

Calvin stared.

"But I'm family.""

Bell smiled.

"So was Elijah.""

My blood ran cold.

Victor moved toward him.

Bell raised the gun.

"Stop.""

Victor stopped.

Bell looked at me.

"Evelyn.""

I hated how familiar that voice sounded.

He had been around my family for decades.

At Christmas dinners.

At funerals.

At birthdays.

He had sat at my table.

He had held my husband's hand.

He had told me Elijah was gone.

I whispered, "You knew.""

"Yes.""

"All these years.""

"Every year.""

My chest tightened.

"You let me mourn him.""

Bell shrugged.

"Grief makes people compliant.""

Victor's eyes burned.

"Where is my father?""

Bell smiled.

"You're very much like him.""

"Answer me.""

"Alive.""

I closed my eyes.

"Where?""

"Under this building.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You're lying.""

Bell turned toward him.

"Daniel.""

Daniel's face tightened.

"You're the last person I expected to see.""

"And you're the last person who should still be alive.""

Bell lifted the gun.

"You betrayed us.""

"I saved them.""

Bell laughed.

"You delayed the inevitable.""

Victor glanced at me.

"What does he mean?""

Bell looked at me.

"Your grandmother knows.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

Bell pulled out a photograph.

He held it up.

It showed me forty years younger.

Holding a newborn.

Elijah stood beside me.

Rebecca stood on the other side.

And behind them was Bell.

But that wasn't what frightened me.

A fourth person stood in the background.

A little boy.

Victor.

I stared.

"That was the night you were born.""

Victor looked at the photograph.

"I wasn't there.""

Bell shook his head.

"Yes, you were.""

"You've been lying to me.""

"I've been protecting you.""

Victor laughed bitterly.

"From what?""

Bell's smile vanished.

"From the truth.""

He pointed toward me.

"Your grandmother signed the original trust.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"No.""

Daniel shook his head.

"She was drugged.""

Bell ignored him.

"She signed.""

I looked at the photograph.

"I don't remember.""

"Because you weren't supposed to.""

Bell stepped closer.

"You think Marlene was your enemy?""

He laughed.

"She was covering for you.""

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"What did my grandmother do?""

I stared at Bell.

"What did I do?""

Bell lowered the gun slightly.

"You financed the escape.""

My breath stopped.

"Whose escape?""

"Elijah's.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You said she didn't know.""

"I said that years ago.""

Bell's voice softened.

"She's forgotten what she did.""

Marlene shook her head.

"No.""

Bell looked at her.

"Be quiet.""

"No!""

For the first time, Marlene screamed.

"You weren't there.""

Bell raised the gun.

"You know nothing.""

"I know exactly what happened.""

Marlene looked at me.

"Evelyn.""

I turned.

Her face was wet with tears.

"Your husband asked you to hide Elijah.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

I stared at him.

"Is that true?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

The memory came rushing back.

Elijah bleeding.

Rebecca carrying the baby.

Daniel whispering:

"Trust me.""

My sister yelling.

A car engine.

A suitcase.

A key.

And me saying:

"I'll do it.""

I grabbed my head.

"I remember.""

Victor caught my shoulders.

"What do you remember?""

I looked at him.

"The old schoolhouse.""

Daniel's face changed.

"Mom.""

"Elijah was there.""

I turned toward Bell.

"You took us there.""

"No.""

"You took Rebecca.""

"No.""

"You took the baby.""

Bell's expression hardened.

"You were confused.""

"No.""

I remembered.

"You tried to take Victor.""

The courthouse fell silent.

Bell's smile disappeared.

I continued.

"Elijah stopped you.""

Daniel nodded.

"He fought him.""

Victor's voice shook.

"What happened?""

I looked at him.

"Elijah gave you to me.""

Victor stared.

"You held me.""

I nodded.

"He said, 'Mom, keep my son safe.''"

Victor's eyes filled.

"What did you do?""

"I ran.""

I whispered the words.

"I ran with you.""

Bell suddenly raised the gun.

"And then?""

I stared at him.

"You found us.""

Bell smiled.

"Exactly.""

Daniel stepped between us.

"And I stopped him.""

Bell's eyes flashed.

"You ruined everything.""

He pulled the trigger.

Victor moved.

The gunshot exploded through the courthouse.

Daniel collapsed.

I screamed.

Victor fired back.

Bell ducked behind the doorway.

Calvin ran.

Marlene crawled toward Daniel.

"Daniel!""

I dropped beside my husband.

Blood spread across his shirt.

"Stay with me.""

He coughed.

"I...""

I held his hand.

"You don't get to die again.""

He smiled weakly.

"Not planning to.""

Victor rushed toward the doorway.

"Bell!""

Footsteps thundered away.

Mason appeared from the lower corridor.

"Boss!""

Victor pointed.

"Go!""

Mason disappeared.

Isabel knelt beside Daniel.

"You saved my father.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Your father saved me first.""

Victor returned.

"He's gone.""

Bell had escaped.

Calvin had escaped with him.

Marlene sat on the floor, shaking.

She looked at me.

"I'm sorry.""

I couldn't answer.

Then a low sound came from beneath us.

Three knocks.

Everyone froze.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Daniel's eyes widened.

"That's Elijah.""

Victor turned toward the floor.

"How do we get down there?""

Daniel pointed to the metal locker.

"Behind it.""

Victor and Mason shoved the locker aside.

A hidden steel door appeared.

Victor used the second key Calvin had dropped.

The lock clicked.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Cold air rushed upward.

I gripped my walker.

Victor looked at me.

"Stay here.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"Grandma...""

I looked down the staircase.

"For forty years, I thought my son was dead.""

I tightened my grip.

"I'm not letting him disappear again.""

We descended.

At the bottom was a concrete chamber.

A chair.

A table.

A single hanging light.

And a man sitting in the corner.

His hair was gray.

His face was thinner.

But the eyes were the same.

My son's eyes.

He stood slowly.

Victor stopped breathing.

Elijah looked at him.

Neither spoke.

Then Elijah whispered:

"My son.""

Victor took one step forward.

"Dad.""

Elijah's hands began to shake.

I pressed both palms over my mouth.

Elijah looked past Victor.

And saw me.

His face collapsed.

"Mom.""

I walked toward him.

Every step hurt.

Every step felt like crossing forty years.

Then I reached him.

He touched my face.

"You came.""

I cried.

"You should have come home.""

"I tried.""

"I know.""

He looked at Victor.

Then at Isabel.

Then at Daniel, who was being carried carefully down the stairs.

Elijah's expression changed.

"He's here.""

I nodded.

Daniel smiled weakly.

"Still causing trouble.""

Elijah laughed through tears.

Then a gunshot echoed from somewhere above.

Everyone froze.

Marlene looked toward the stairs.

Her face went white.

"Bell.""

Victor raised his weapon.

But before he could move, Elijah grabbed his arm.

"No.""

Victor looked at him.

"You know where he's going?""

Elijah nodded.

He pointed toward the rear wall.

"He's going to the diner.""

I stared.

"Why?""

Elijah's voice dropped.

"Because the money isn't under the courthouse.""

He looked directly at me.

"It's under the Blue Lantern.""

May you like

And from upstairs came the unmistakable sound of the diner door being unlocked with a key.

*Daniel's key.*
