Chapter 11: The Lie Buried With My Husband

The accusation struck me harder than any slap.

"I ordered Elijah's disappearance?""

Daniel stared at me.

"No.""

"Then why did she say that?""

"Because she wants Victor to believe it.""

Victor looked at me.

"I don't.""

Daniel nodded.

"Good.""

A spotlight swept across the roof again.

Marlene's voice came over the loudspeaker.

"Evelyn, tell him what happened before Elijah vanished.""

I shook my head.

"I don't know.""

"Exactly.""

Daniel moved closer.

"Your memory was altered.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

He reached inside his coat.

"Do you remember the headaches?""

I hesitated.

Yes.

For years, doctors had told me stress caused them.

Daniel continued.

"The migraines started after Elijah disappeared.""

I nodded slowly.

"You said it was grief.""

"It wasn't.""

He held up a tiny glass vial.

"Sedatives.""

Victor's face hardened.

"She drugged you.""

"Who?""

Daniel answered.

"Marlene.""

I felt sick.

"No.""

"She gave you medication.""

"I remember.""

"Every time you became close to remembering the truth, she gave you more.""

I stared at the vial.

"Why would she do that?""

"Because Elijah left you something.""

"What?""

Daniel reached into his pocket.

A small key.

Not brass.

Silver.

I recognized it immediately.

"My father's key.""

He nodded.

"It opens a locker.""

"Where?""

"Under the old courthouse.""

Victor looked confused.

"Why there?""

"Because that's where Elijah hid the original records.""

Marlene's voice came again.

"You have ten minutes.""

Daniel looked toward the helicopter.

"We need to move.""

Victor shook his head.

"No.""

Daniel frowned.

"We need the locker.""

"We need my father.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Elijah is already there.""

I froze.

"Where?""

"Underground.""

Victor's expression changed.

"With Marlene?""

"No.""

Daniel swallowed.

"With the people who took him.""

We descended the opposite side of the warehouse.

A black truck waited in an alley.

Daniel tossed Victor the keys.

"Drive.""

Victor got behind the wheel.

I sat beside him.

Isabel and Daniel climbed in the back.

Rain streamed across the windshield.

Victor slammed his foot down.

As we sped through town, I looked at Daniel in the rearview mirror.

He seemed smaller now.

Not the strong husband I remembered.

Just an old man carrying forty years of guilt.

I turned around.

"Why did you marry me?""

He looked at me.

"Because I fell in love with you.""

"After you were sent to spy on me?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"The first time you gave me coffee and refused to charge me.""

I almost laughed despite myself.

"You hated coffee.""

"I hated your coffee.""

Victor glanced at me.

"You made bad coffee?""

"Terrible.""

Daniel smiled.

"For forty-three years.""

The smile disappeared.

"That's why leaving you was the hardest thing I ever did.""

I looked away.

"I hated you.""

"I know.""

"I buried you.""

"I know.""

"You let me cry over an empty coffin.""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I'm sorry.""

I whispered, "Was Elijah there?""

"No.""

"Whose body?""

"Nobody.""

I stared at him.

"You buried an empty coffin?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"To convince them you believed he was dead.""

Victor's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"Where was Elijah?""

"Underground.""

At the courthouse, Victor parked beneath an awning.

We entered through a side door.

The building was closed.

Daniel led us down a stairwell.

The farther we went, the colder it became.

At the bottom was an old records room.

Dust covered everything.

Daniel walked to a wall.

He pressed his palm against one brick.

A compartment opened.

Inside was a metal locker.

Number *417*.

My heart jumped.

"The key.""

Victor handed it to me.

My hand shook as I unlocked it.

Inside lay hundreds of documents.

Photographs.

Bank records.

And a cassette tape.

I pulled out the first photograph.

Elijah.

Rebecca.

Victor as a baby.

All three together.

Behind them stood Marlene.

And Daniel.

I looked at Daniel.

"You knew.""

"Yes.""

"How long?""

"Since Victor was two.""

Victor stared at the photograph.

"You watched me grow up?""

"I watched from a distance.""

"Why didn't you find me?""

Daniel lowered his head.

"I tried.""

Victor's voice cracked.

"You don't get to say that.""

The room went silent.

I opened another folder.

The first page contained a handwritten statement.

*I, Daniel Mercer, confirm that the Blue Lantern operation was controlled by Bell & Sons.*

Victor looked at me.

"Bell & Sons.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's the real organization.""

"Mr. Bell?""

"His father founded it.""

I turned another page.

My name appeared.

*Evelyn Carter — property holder and unwitting asset.*

I exhaled.

"Asset.""

Daniel nodded.

"They never meant to hurt you.""

"They used me.""

"Yes.""

I found a second document.

A transfer authorization.

The signature at the bottom looked like mine.

But something was wrong.

I knew that signature.

It wasn't mine.

"It was forged.""

Victor leaned over.

"By whom?""

The page contained a witness signature.

*Calvin Hart.*

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

"He forged my name.""

Victor nodded.

"And Marlene approved it.""

Daniel pointed to another page.

"There's more.""

At the bottom was an account number.

Beneath it:

*Final beneficiary — Isabel Carter.*

Isabel's eyes widened.

"Me?""

Daniel nodded.

"Everything was supposed to pass to you.""

"Why?""

"Because Elijah built the trust to protect you.""

I stared at the papers.

"Then Calvin wasn't trying to steal the diner.""

"No.""

"He was trying to stop Isabel from inheriting it.""

Daniel looked at me.

"And he was trying to make sure Elijah never reached her.""

A distant metallic clang echoed from beneath the courthouse.

Victor raised his head.

"What was that?""

Daniel's face went white.

"They found the lower chamber.""

Victor drew his weapon.

"Can they get in?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Only if they have the key.""

I looked at the silver key in my hand.

"Then we're safe.""

Daniel stared at me.

"No.""

He pointed toward the locker.

"Because there should be two keys.""

Victor frowned.

"Where's the second?""

Daniel looked at the floor.

Then at me.

"It was given to the person who controls the trust.""

The courthouse lights suddenly came on.

Footsteps sounded above us.

A familiar voice spoke from the stairwell.

"You're looking for this?""

I turned.

Calvin stood at the top of the stairs.

In his hand was the second key.

And beside him stood Marlene.

But she wasn't smiling anymore.

She was terrified.

May you like

Because someone was standing behind her with a gun.

A man I had never expected to see.
