Chapter 32 - THE PRINTING PLANT

The abandoned printing plant stood beside an old freight yard, surrounded by rusted fencing and empty warehouses.
Investigators established surveillance before the meeting. Officers monitored the entrances while a forensic team prepared to secure any documents or electronic devices found inside.
I remained at a nearby command post with Detective Carter.
I wanted to be there when Richard arrived.
Carter had made it clear that I would not enter the building unless the situation required it. The operation was intended to gather evidence, not create another confrontation.
At 9:42 p.m., a black sedan entered the property.
Richard stepped out.
Ten minutes later, another vehicle arrived.
Adrian Vale emerged from the passenger seat.
He was older than I had expected, perhaps in his early sixties, with silver hair and a narrow face. On his right hand was a black signet ring.
The same ring from the photograph.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Carter watched the monitors.
"That's our man."
Richard and Adrian entered the building.
Their conversation was captured through authorized surveillance.
At first, they discussed the financial accounts. Adrian complained that Vanessa had panicked and allowed Emily to escape. Richard responded that he had underestimated Lily.
Then Adrian asked about the trust.
"Is Claire under control?"
Richard shook his head.
"She has a lawyer now. We need to stop her claim before it becomes public."
"What about Daniel?"
"He'll do whatever it takes to protect his daughter."
Adrian laughed.
"Then he'll do exactly what we need him to do."
Richard turned toward him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means the final transfer must happen before the investigation reaches the old accounts. Once the shares move, the family trust will be too complicated to unwind quickly."
"And the evidence?"
Adrian placed a metal case on the table.
"Everything goes tonight."
Inside the case were several storage devices and bundles of paper.
Carter signaled the team to prepare.
Then Adrian said something that changed the atmosphere in the room.
"Your father should have understood this, Daniel."
I froze.
Adrian was looking directly toward a camera hidden above the doorway.
He couldn't possibly know I was watching.
Yet his words sounded deliberate.
"Henry thought he could confess and walk away. Your mother thought the truth would save her. Emily thought documents would protect her. They all made the same mistake."
Richard's face tightened.
"Stop talking."
"No. You wanted the boy to learn how the world works. Let him hear it."
Adrian leaned toward the camera.
"Your family built its fortune on secrets, Daniel. You inherited the money, the reputation, and the consequences. The only difference between you and your father is that he understood when to stop asking questions."
Carter signaled the arrest team.
Officers entered from both sides.
"Police! Step away from the table!"
Richard raised his hands immediately.
Adrian did not.
He grabbed the metal case and ran toward a rear corridor.
Officers pursued him while another team secured Richard and the evidence.
A loud crash echoed through the building.
Then came the sound of breaking glass.
Adrian had reached a loading platform and was attempting to climb down to the freight yard.
An officer intercepted him before he could reach the fence.
The case fell to the ground.
Several documents scattered across the concrete.
Within minutes, both men were in custody.
Carter approached Richard while officers secured Adrian.
"Richard Cole, you're under arrest in connection with the ongoing investigation. You have the right to remain silent."
Richard looked toward the command post, where I stood behind the glass.
For a moment, our eyes met.
He did not look angry.
He looked disappointed.
As if I had betrayed him by refusing to remain ignorant.
That expression hurt more than I expected.
I had spent my childhood believing Richard was part of my family. I had trusted him with my business, my grief, and my daughter's future.
Now I watched him being led away in handcuffs.
The evidence recovered from the plant included transaction records, forged authorizations, and communications connecting Adrian to the shell companies.
But the most important discovery was a sealed envelope addressed to Richard.
Inside was a draft statement blaming my father for the entire fraud.
It had been prepared before Emily disappeared.
The plan was clear.
If the investigation ever reached the authorities, Richard intended to claim that my father had acted alone and that the financial records had been altered after his death.
He would protect himself by sacrificing a dead man.
And he would have succeeded if Emily had not survived.
As the officers cleared the building, Carter received a call from the forensic team.
They had found a final encrypted file on one of Adrian's devices.
Its title was simple.
OCTOBER 17 — COMPLETE.
May you like
The date Emily disappeared.
And the file contained a recording that no one in my family had heard before.
