Chapter 29 - THE CHILD MY FATHER HID

The photograph led us to a hospital archive.

After reviewing the date and the name written on the back, investigators identified the woman standing beside my mother as a nurse who had worked in the maternity department decades earlier.

She was retired now and living in a small coastal town.

When Carter contacted her, she agreed to meet us.

Her name was Eleanor Price.

She arrived carrying a leather handbag and a folder of old photographs. She looked at me for a long time before sitting down.

"You have your father's eyes," she said.

"Did you know him?"

"I knew your mother."

Eleanor opened the folder and removed a photograph of a young woman holding a baby.

The woman was my mother.

The baby was the same child from the picture I had found.

"Who was she?" I asked.

Eleanor folded her hands.

"Your father's daughter."

I stared at her.

"My father had another child?"

"Before you were born."

"Who was the mother?"

"A young woman named Victoria Vale."

The surname meant nothing to me at first.

Then I remembered the name from the old account records.

Adrian Vale.

"Was she related to Adrian?"

Eleanor nodded.

"She was his younger sister."

The room seemed to grow smaller.

According to Eleanor, Victoria had been involved with my father when he was a young businessman. Their relationship ended before he married my mother, but Victoria later gave birth to a daughter.

My father provided financial support, but he insisted that the child remain outside the public family history.

"Why would my mother keep the photograph?"

"Because she knew the child existed. She wanted your father to acknowledge her openly."

"Did he?"

"Not while I knew them."

Eleanor paused.

"Your mother believed the child deserved to know who her father was. She wanted to help Victoria, but your father feared the scandal would damage the company."

I struggled to process the information.

My father had hidden an entire branch of our family while presenting himself as a man who valued loyalty above everything else.

"Do you know what happened to the girl?"

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"Her name was Claire. She was adopted by another family when she was young. Your father continued sending money, but he never met her publicly."

"Is she alive?"

"Yes. At least, she was when I last heard from her."

Carter asked Eleanor whether she knew anything about Richard's relationship with Victoria or Adrian.

She shook her head.

But before leaving, she gave us a second envelope.

"Your mother asked me to keep this in case anything happened to her."

Inside was a letter addressed to my father.

It was dated one week before my mother's death.

Henry, I know about Victoria's daughter. I know you have been sending money through accounts Richard controls. I don't care about the scandal anymore. I care that you are allowing these people to use a child as a secret and a financial instrument.

The letter continued.

If you will not tell Daniel the truth, I will. If you will not stop Richard, I will take the evidence to the authorities myself.

At the bottom, my mother had written one final sentence.

I hope you remember that a family is not protected by hiding its sins.

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had believed my mother died before she could understand the complexity of the business my father built.

Now I knew she had understood enough to be afraid.

Carter carefully sealed the letter.

"We'll investigate Claire's identity and determine whether she has any information relevant to the financial records."

I looked at the photograph again.

My father had hidden a daughter.

My mother had tried to protect her.

Richard had controlled the money intended to support her.

And Adrian, whose family was tied to the secret, had spent years helping move money through the same network.

The connection was too significant to ignore.

But there was another question I couldn't answer.

Why had Vanessa been so desperate to obtain the family trust documents?

The trust contained the shares my father had set aside for Lily.

It also contained a clause allowing a previously undisclosed biological child to challenge certain inheritance arrangements if evidence of deliberate concealment or fraud emerged.

If Claire was my father's daughter, then she might have had a legitimate claim to part of the estate.

Someone had known that.

May you like

Someone had used that knowledge to build a conspiracy around the family trust.

And someone had imprisoned Emily because she had discovered the truth.
