Chapter 31 - THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT

The threat arrived just before midnight.

Rebecca called me from the hospital.

"The power has gone out on Emily's floor," she said. "The emergency lights are on, but the nurses are moving everyone."

I was already reaching for my coat.

"Where's Lily?"

"With Emily. They're together."

"Don't let them leave the room until security arrives."

"Daniel, the nurses are saying someone triggered the emergency system."

I called Carter as I ran toward the car.

He dispatched officers to the hospital and instructed the security team to secure the entrances.

When I arrived, the building was filled with confusion. Patients were being moved through dim corridors, and staff members were directing visitors toward the stairwells.

I found Rebecca near the nurses' station.

"Where are they?"

"Room twelve. But someone tried to enter before the lights went out."

"Who?"

"A man wearing a hospital uniform. He said he was transferring Emily for additional tests."

"Did he have identification?"

"Yes. But the nurse became suspicious when he couldn't answer questions about her treatment."

We hurried toward the room.

Emily was standing beside the bed, holding Lily close. A nurse had locked the door, and an officer was positioned outside.

When she saw me, Emily began to cry.

"They're trying again."

I wrapped my arms around both of them.

"No one is taking you anywhere."

Carter arrived minutes later.

The emergency lighting had been restored, but the hospital's security systems remained offline. Investigators found that someone had accessed the electrical control room using a copied contractor badge.

The attempt had failed because a nurse noticed the impersonator's inconsistent instructions.

That nurse's quick thinking may have saved Emily's life.

The hospital transferred Emily and Lily to a secure facility while technicians examined the compromised systems.

At the new location, Carter showed us a photograph recovered from the original hospital's corridor.

The man in the uniform was Michael Grant.

Again.

But this time, his face was clear.

An arrest warrant was issued.

Michael was found the next morning at a motel near the interstate. When officers entered the room, he attempted to escape through a rear window but was apprehended outside.

During questioning, he initially denied knowing Vanessa.

Then investigators showed him the photographs from the hotel, the hospital, and the old estate.

His resistance collapsed.

Michael admitted that he had helped Vanessa access the locked room at the hotel and had arranged for supplies to be delivered without appearing on the building's official records.

He also admitted that he had received payments from a company linked to Adrian Vale.

But he insisted that he had never been told to kill Emily.

"Who told you to frighten the family?" Carter asked.

Michael stared at the table.

"Richard."

"Did Richard know Emily was alive?"

"Yes."

"When did he find out?"

"From the beginning."

I stood behind the observation window, listening.

Every new confession seemed to deepen the betrayal.

Richard had known that Emily was alive while attending family gatherings, offering condolences, and telling me to move forward with my life.

He had watched Lily grow up believing her mother had abandoned her.

And he had allowed me to believe that my wife had chosen to leave.

Carter continued the interview.

"Who ordered the attempt at the hospital?"

Michael hesitated.

"Adrian."

"Why?"

"He said Emily could identify the original account records and the people who helped move the money."

"Did he tell you to harm Lily?"

Michael shook his head.

"He said the girl was a risk. I don't know what he intended."

"Did Richard approve the plan?"

Michael looked away.

"He approved anything Adrian wanted, as long as it protected the company."

The statement gave investigators grounds to pursue further charges, subject to corroboration.

But Michael had one more piece of information.

He told Carter that Adrian had arranged a private meeting with Richard at an abandoned printing plant on the outskirts of the city.

The meeting was scheduled for the following night.

And Michael believed they intended to destroy the remaining records.

Carter immediately began planning a lawful operation to secure the location.

I looked toward the room where Emily and Lily were resting.

For three years, the people responsible had relied on secrecy, fear, and the assumption that no one would believe a frightened woman over a wealthy family.

Now their own network was beginning to unravel.

But I knew better than to celebrate.

The men who had hidden the truth for decades would not surrender simply because the first pieces of evidence had been found.
