Chapter 7: The Family Secret

I didn’t speak on the drive home.

Neither did Daniel.

The silence felt like a wall between us.

My father.

My mother.

Claire.

The wedding.

Everything I thought I understood was changing.

When we arrived, my mother was already waiting.

She stood in the living room.

And the moment she saw my face, she knew.

“You found out.””

Those three words destroyed the last piece of hope I had.

“Mom.””

My voice cracked.

“How long?””

She sat down slowly.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“You don’t know?””

Daniel stood beside me.

“Mrs. Carter, we need answers.””

My mother looked at him.

“I know.””

She folded her hands.

“I know I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?”” I repeated.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice rose.

“You let me believe Claire betrayed me alone.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“I was trying to fix it.””

“By letting me take the blame?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She took a deep breath.

“The wedding payment wasn’t the first problem.””

I waited.

“Your father left behind debt.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“When he passed, there were financial issues.””

“I thought everything was settled.””

“So did I.””

She looked exhausted.

“But someone had been hiding accounts.””

Daniel looked confused.

“How does this connect to Vanessa?””

My mother looked at him.

“Because Vanessa’s company discovered the same person.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

My mother didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I already knew.

“Claire?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

The room became silent.

“Then who?””

My mother looked at me.

“Your uncle.””

I froze.

My father’s brother.

The man who had attended my wedding.

The man who had given a speech about family.

The man who had hugged me and called me his “little girl.””

“No.””

“He has been moving money for years.””

“Why would he?””

My mother looked down.

“Because your father trusted him.””

I felt sick.

“So what does the wedding have to do with this?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your uncle needed someone to blame.””

“And Claire?””

“She was desperate.””

My mother explained that my uncle had approached Claire first.

He knew her jealousy.

He knew her anger.

He knew exactly what to say.

“He convinced her she was only taking what life owed her.””

I thought about Claire.

Her words.

Her pain.

Her bitterness.

She had been manipulated.

But she had still chosen to participate.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

My mother started crying.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would hate me.””

The answer was so honest that it hurt.

I sat down.

For years, I thought my mother was the person who always knew what to do.

Now I saw her as someone scared and lost.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Again.

Everyone froze.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

His expression changed.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“It’s Vanessa.””

I stood.

“What did she say?””

Daniel covered the phone.

“She found your uncle.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

He looked terrified.

“He’s at the police station.””

“What?””

“He turned himself in.””

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel heard something else.

His face changed.

“Wait.””

A pause.

Then:

“Vanessa says he brought evidence.””

My mother whispered:

“Evidence of what?””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

He looked at me.

“The person who started all of this…”

He swallowed.

“Wasn’t your uncle.””

The room went cold.

“Then who?””

Daniel looked at the phone.

Then at me.

May you like

And said:

“Vanessa says the person behind everything is someone we never suspected.””
