Chapter 4: The Guest Who Saved Everything
The next morning, my wedding photos looked completely different.
Before everything happened, I imagined showing them to everyone.
I imagined people admiring the flowers.
The dress.
The venue.
The perfect evening.
Now I could barely look at them.
Because every picture reminded me of the moment I revealed who I really was.
Daniel and I sat in the hotel room after the reception ended.
Neither of us slept.
The silence between us was heavier than any argument.
Finally, I spoke.
“Who was stealing?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I don’t know yet.””
“But Vanessa thinks it connects to us?””
He nodded.
“She found unusual payments from a company account.””
I frowned.
“Why would someone steal from her company?””
“Because the amount was large.””
“And why would she come to our wedding?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because one of the suspicious transactions was connected to the wedding.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
He opened his laptop.
“I didn’t want to tell you last night because everything was already falling apart.””
He turned the screen toward me.
There was a payment record.
A large transfer.
My name appeared on the document.
I stared at it.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“I didn’t do this.””
“I know.””
His answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“You believe me?””
He looked hurt.
“Of course I do.””
I looked away.
Because suddenly I remembered something.
A conversation from weeks earlier.
A moment I had ignored.
My cousin Rachel had asked about the wedding budget.
She had seemed unusually interested.
“How much did everything cost?”” she asked.
I laughed.
“Why?””
She smiled.
“I’m just curious.””
At the time, I thought nothing of it.
Now my stomach tightened.
“I need to call someone.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Who?””
“Rachel.””
The call went unanswered.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a message appeared.
I can’t talk right now.
I stared at the screen.
Daniel noticed.
“What happened?””
“She’s avoiding me.””
Before he could respond, Vanessa called.
Daniel answered immediately.
“Ms. Williams?””
Her voice came through the speaker.
“Daniel, I found something.””
We both froze.
“What?””
“There is evidence someone accessed the wedding payment account using Emily’s information.””
I felt cold.
“My information?””
“Yes.””
I stood up.
“But I didn’t do that.””
“I know,” Vanessa replied.
Her calm certainty surprised me.
“How do you know?””
“Because the person who did it wanted you to take the blame.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“Because they knew Emily would be the easiest person to convince everyone.””
The words hurt.
Not because they were cruel.
Because there was truth inside them.
Someone had counted on people believing the worst about me.
Maybe because of my own actions.
Maybe because of the way I treated others.
Daniel stood beside me.
“We need to find out who did this.””
Vanessa agreed.
“I’m sending investigators the information now.””
I closed my eyes.
The wedding I thought was ruined had become something else.
A lesson.
A warning.
A chance to become someone better.
But there was still one person who had disappeared.
Rachel.
And when I finally reached her voicemail, I heard something in the background.
A familiar voice.
A voice I recognized immediately.
I held the phone tighter.
Because the person speaking with Rachel wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone who had been standing beside me on my wedding day.
Someone who had smiled in every photograph.
Someone who had watched me destroy Vanessa.
Then I heard the voice whisper:
May you like
“Don’t worry. Emily will take the blame for everything.””
And I knew my wedding nightmare was only beginning.
