Chapter 5: The Person Behind The Smile
I replayed the voicemail so many times that I started hearing the words even when the phone was silent.
“Don’t worry. Emily will take the blame for everything.””
The voice belonged to Claire.
My best friend.
The woman who had fixed my veil.
The woman who had held my hand before I walked down the aisle.
The woman who had whispered that I looked like a movie star.
The woman who had stood beside me while I humiliated Vanessa.
I stared at Daniel.
Neither of us spoke.
Sometimes the truth doesn’t arrive like an explosion.
Sometimes it arrives like a crack in a mirror.
Small.
Almost invisible.
Until suddenly you realize everything you were looking at was broken.
“Say something,” Daniel whispered.
I couldn’t.
My mind kept searching for another explanation.
A mistake.
A misunderstanding.
Anything.
“Maybe it wasn’t Claire,” I finally said.
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily.””
“I mean… voices can sound similar.””
He didn’t answer.
Because we both knew.
I knew that voice.
For years, I had known that voice.
Claire had been there when I got my first apartment.
She had cried with me after my father’s funeral.
She had helped me choose my wedding dress.
She had been the person I trusted most.
And somehow, she had been the person standing closest to the disaster.
Daniel picked up his phone.
“We need to tell Vanessa.””
I nodded.
But before he could call, his phone rang.
It was Vanessa.
He answered immediately.
“Hello?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
I watched his face carefully.
“Are you sure?””
A pause.
Then:
“Okay. We’ll come.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“They found something.””
“About Claire?””
He nodded.
My stomach twisted.
“Where?””
“At the venue.””
The reception hall looked completely different the next morning.
The flowers were still there.
The white decorations were still hanging from the ceiling.
The same place where I had felt so proud now felt like a crime scene.
Vanessa stood near the entrance with two investigators.
She looked exhausted.
But composed.
She always looked composed.
I wondered how many times in her life she had been forced to stay calm while people judged her.
“Emily,” she said.
I walked toward her.
“I’m sorry.””
She studied my face.
“You don’t have to apologize every five minutes.””
“I do.””
“No,” she said softly.
“You need to understand.””
I nodded.
“I do.””
One of the investigators approached Daniel.
“We found security footage.””
Daniel looked up.
“Of what?””
“The payment office.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“The venue has a private office for financial records. Someone accessed it two days before the wedding.””
Vanessa handed Daniel a tablet.
The video showed a person entering the office.
The quality wasn’t perfect.
But the clothing was familiar.
A cream-colored jacket.
A gold bracelet.
A hairstyle I recognized.
My breath caught.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily?””
“That’s Claire.””
Nobody spoke.
The investigator nodded.
“We believe she copied financial information and used your identity to hide the transaction.””
“But why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I walked around the room slowly.
Every memory of the past few months felt different.
Claire asking about the wedding budget.
Claire asking which accounts I used.
Claire offering to “help organize things.””
I thought she was being supportive.
I thought she cared.
I had no idea she was collecting information.
“Where is she?”” Daniel asked.
The investigator checked his notes.
“She hasn’t answered calls.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I couldn’t understand how someone could stand beside me smiling while planning to destroy me.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Claire.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Emily, I heard what happened. I’m sorry everything became so messy.
I stared at the screen.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Don’t respond.””
But another message appeared.
We need to talk before Vanessa ruins your life.
My eyes narrowed.
“Before Vanessa ruins my life?””
Daniel looked angry.
“She’s still trying to manipulate you.””
I typed a reply before I could stop myself.
Where are you?
The answer came immediately.
The old coffee shop where we used to meet.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“I’m coming.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Emily.””
“This is something I need to do.””
He looked concerned.
“You don’t know what she’s capable of.””
I looked at him.
“I know now.””
That was the painful part.
I had spent months judging Vanessa because of what she looked like.
I had ignored Claire because of what I believed she was.
I wasn’t making that mistake again.
The coffee shop was nearly empty.
Rain tapped against the windows.
Claire sat at our usual table.
The same corner where we had celebrated my engagement.
The same place where she had hugged me and said:
“You finally found your dream life.””
Now she looked completely different.
She looked nervous.
“Emily.””
I sat across from her.
“What happened?””
She looked away.
“I didn’t want this.””
I almost laughed.
“You didn’t want this?””
“No.””
“You stole financial information.””
“I borrowed it.””
My expression hardened.
“You used my name.””
She sighed.
“Because nobody would question you.””
The words hit me.
“Nobody would question me?””
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“Emily, think about it. Everyone sees you as the perfect bride. The perfect wife. The perfect person.””
I stared at her.
“And you thought I deserved to take the fall?””
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“Why?”” I asked.
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“Because you always get everything.””
I froze.
“What?””
“You always get everything.””
She leaned forward.
“You had the perfect family. The perfect relationship. The perfect wedding.””
“You think that’s why?””
“I think you never noticed anyone else struggling.””
Her words hurt because there was a small piece of truth.
I had been selfish.
But not in the way she believed.
“I made mistakes,” I said quietly.
“But that doesn’t give you the right to destroy me.””
Claire looked down.
“I just needed money.””
“How much?””
Silence.
“How much, Claire?””
She whispered:
“Enough to start over.””
I stared at her.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa.
A message that changed everything.
Emily, ask her about the second account.
I looked back at Claire.
“What second account?””
Her face changed.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
May you like
And I knew Vanessa had been right.
Claire wasn’t telling me the whole truth.
