Chapter 50

Dante stepped out from the swirling mist, the suppressed pistol held rock-steady in his right hand, his face splattered with rain and the dark blood of his enemies. He looked like an ancient titan rising from the underworld, his dark eyes devoid of all mercy, his massive frame radiating an aura of absolute, terrifying finality. Antoine sank to his knees on the slick concrete, his hands raised in a desperate, pathetic gesture of surrender. "Wait... Dante, wait!" Antoine stammered, his teeth chattering violently in the freezing rain. "We can make a deal! The European families... they have billions in offshore accounts! I can give you the access codes! I can give you the Mediterranean trade!"

Dante stopped three paces away, looking down at the groveling warlord with a look of pure, unadulterated disgust. "You threatened my wife while she was on a delivery table, Antoine," Dante said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that cut through the roar of the surf. "You brought your killers to the house where my daughters sleep. There are no deals. There is no money in this world that buys back your life." Dante stepped forward, his leather boot coming down with crushing force onto Antoine’s shoulder, pinning the screaming Frenchman flat against the concrete. He leveled the barrel of his pistol directly between Antoine’s eyes. "Tell the devil that Dante Russo sent you."

BANG.

The single gunshot echoed out over the mouth of the Tiber, swallowed instantly by the roaring storm. Dante lowered his weapon, stepping back as the lifeless body of the Corsican warlord lay still on the edge of the pier. He didn't look down. He turned his back on the carnage, holstering his sidearm and walking through the dark, deserted rail yard toward his motorcycle. The blood debt had been paid in full. The syndicate that had threatened his family was completely broken, its leadership extinguished in the rain. Yet, as Dante climbed onto the bike and wiped the water from his face, a sudden, heavy vibration buzzed against his chest.

It was not his phone. It was an encrypted satellite receiver he had recovered from Antoine’s body. Dante pulled the small black device from his pocket and pressed the glowing screen. A single, automated message flashed in high-encryption text, originating from an IP address routed through an untraceable server in Zurich, accompanied by a digital timestamp that had been generated less than five minutes ago:

Operation Corsica terminated. Protocol Omega initiated. All sleeper cells in North America and Western Europe, awaken. The Russo bloodline must be extinguished before the child speaks.

Dante stared at the glowing text, his jaw clenching so tight the bone threatened to crack. He looked up into the stormy Roman sky, feeling the cold rain pelt his scarred face. The war was not over. Antoine was merely a pawn, a distraction sent to test his defenses while an even larger, older shadow moved silently through the global syndicate. Dante pocketed the device, kicked the motorcycle into gear, and sped back toward the clinic on the Aventine Hill. He had saved his family tonight, but as the dawn broke faintly over the ancient city, Dante knew that the peace he had fought so desperately to build was merely the quiet eye of a storm that would follow them forever.
