Chapter 44

The autumn twilight surrendered to a moonless, suffocating blackness as dense fog rolled down from the mountains, enveloping the winding, treacherous roads of the Tuscan hills. Dante drove the heavy, customized SUV without headlights, relying entirely on military-grade thermal night-vision optics mounted to the dashboard. The digital display cast an eerie, greenish glow across his rugged face as he navigated the narrow asphalt ribbons bordering sheer limestone cliffs. In the back seat, Sophia had curled her small body against Maya’s side, her head resting on her mother’s lap, while Maya’s fingers rhythmically stroked the girl's curls, keeping her anchored in a state of quiet calm. Beside them, Matteo leaned against the reinforced door, his right hand gripping an automatic pistol despite the fever burning behind his glassy eyes.

Three miles from the regional highway, Dante’s sharp eyes caught a thermal anomaly on the digital display—a faint, flickering heat signature nestled in a dense copse of cypress trees overlooking a natural choke point where the road narrowed across a single-lane stone bridge. Dante’s foot hovered over the brake, his mind calculating the ambush angles in a fraction of a second. "Hold on," he growled in a low, dangerous tone. Before the words had fully registered, the night exploded into violence. A high-caliber sniper round tore through the mist, striking the reinforced engine block of the SUV with a concussive, deafening metallic clang. The bullet failed to pierce the armor, but the impact shuddered through the chassis, triggering a second blast as an explosive charge buried beneath the bridge’s asphalt detonated in a fountain of rock, dirt, and fire.

The SUV bucked violently, its front tires blowing out as the shockwave hurled the heavy vehicle toward the edge of the ravine. Dante fought the steering wheel with brute, muscular force, wrenching the tires into the skid and slamming the battered vehicle into the protective embankment on the right, shielding the passenger cabin from the cliff's drop. "Stay down! Do not lift your heads!" Dante roared over the deafening rattle of automatic rifle fire chewing through the outer panels of the car. He didn't wait for the ambushers to close the distance. Kicking open the driver’s side door, Dante rolled out into the muddy ditch, using the armored body of the vehicle as an anchor.

Through the swirling smoke and rain, four tactical shooters in black combat gear advanced across the road, their rifle barrels spitting rhythmic tongues of yellow flame. Dante rose from behind the rear tire like a vengeful specter, his assault rifle barking in disciplined, three-round bursts. The first shooter dropped instantly, a heavy round punching through his chest plate. Dante pivoted with fluid, terrifying grace, firing through the mist to drop the second attacker before the man could seek cover behind a stone marker. The remaining two mercenaries scrambled toward the ditch, but Dante was already moving. He vaulted over the hood of the SUV, closing the distance with terrifying speed, firing his sidearm point-blank into the third man’s visor while using his combat knife to drive an upward strike beneath the final attacker’s jaw. In less than forty seconds, the road was dead silent once more, save for the hissing steam of the ruined radiator and the steady drumming of rain against the shattered bridge.
