Chapter 48

"Dante..." Maya whispered, her voice weak from surgery, her grip on the infant tightening instinctively. Dante walked to the side of the bed, dropping to one knee so his eyes were level with hers. He looked down at the tiny, perfect face of his newborn daughter, watching her delicate chest rise and fall beneath the soft flannel blanket. He extended his scarred index finger, his heart aching with an unbearable tenderness as the baby’s tiny hand instinctively wrapped around his knuckle, holding on with surprising strength. "Her name is Hope," Dante murmured softly, his voice thick with unshed tears. "Because she was born out of the darkness, and she is the reason we will survive."
Maya’s eyes filled with tears as she looked from her daughter to her husband. "He called, didn't he? Antoine found us." Dante didn't lie to her; he had promised from the moment they stood together in the bakery that there would be no more secrets between them. "He is waiting at the freight docks in Ostia. If I don't go, he brings the war here, to this room, to our children. I have to finish it where the world cannot see." Maya reached out her free hand, cupping his stubbled jaw, her thumb brushing across the rugged scar near his lip. She was terrified, every maternal instinct screaming at the thought of him walking into a slaughterhouse, but she understood the brutal reality of their existence. Dante was not just her husband; he was the iron shield that kept the monsters of the earth away from their door.

"You take Matteo’s men," Maya pleaded softly. "You don't walk into a trap alone." Dante shook his head, leaning in to press a gentle, lingering kiss to her forehead, breathing in the sweet scent of her skin. "Antoine has lookouts on the perimeter. If he sees a convoy, he gives the order to strike this building before I can reach the pier. I have to go alone. But I am not going to die, Maya. I spent thirty years learning how to kill men who think like Antoine. He thinks he is fighting a retired mobster who has grown soft. He doesn't understand that a man with a family is the most dangerous creature alive."
Dante stood, his towering frame casting a long, protective shadow over the bed. He turned to Sophia, kneeling down once more to look into his eldest daughter’s eyes. "Sophia, look after your mother and your sister until I return. You are the big sister now. Can you do that for me?" Sophia nodded bravely, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "I will, Daddy. Bring us home." Dante stood, pulled his tactical field jacket tight over his armor, and checked the chamber of his sidearm with a smooth, decisive click. He didn't look back as he walked out the door, knowing that if he lingered for even a second, the warmth of that room would break his resolve. He descended into the underground garage, mounted a high-powered tactical motorcycle, and tore out into the stormy Roman night, heading toward the mouth of the Tiber like a thunderbolt of retribution.
