Chapter 24 - The Signature

Catherine removed her heel from Isabella’s throat. Isabella curled into a fetal position on the wet deck, coughing and gasping for breath.
Catherine straightened her coat, dabbed the scratch on her cheek with a monogrammed handkerchief, and picked up the legal folder from the table.
"It’s very simple, Mark," Catherine said, stepping down one stair toward me. "The syndicate doesn't want the child. They want the patents and the commercial portfolio. But by law, those assets cannot be transferred without the signature of Nathan's legal guardian."
She tapped the document.
"This is a total surrender of the Vance Corporate Trust. In exchange, Vault 409 will be incinerated in Zurich. The paternity records Dr. Keller kept will be permanently scrubbed from the medical cloud. Nathan remains legally, biologically, and forever *your* son. No courts. No inquiries. No whispers."
"And if we refuse?" Khloe called out from the mud, her voice suddenly cutting through the storm.
She was standing up now. Her knees were black with gravel and dirt, her hair plastered to her skull, but her eyes—those dark, fierce eyes that Anthony had passed down to her—were blazing with an infernal fury.
"If you refuse, Khloe," Catherine replied evenly, "the court receives the petition at noon. You and Mark will spend the next ten years in federal litigation. You will go bankrupt. Your marriage will disintegrate under the weight of paternity tests and public disgrace. And Nathan will grow up knowing his grandfather orchestrated his very conception like a lab experiment."
Khloe walked slowly toward the porch.
She looked at me. Her eyes held an agony so profound it nearly made me fall to my knees. The silent question hung between us, heavy and toxic: *Is Nathan mine? Or was our entire life an engineered lie?*
I reached out and took her freezing hand.
"We don't sign," I told her quietly. "We face it. We take him and we disappear."
"Disappear with what, Mark?" Catherine scoffed, offering a gold Montblanc pen. "You have no money. Your house is a crime scene. Sign the surrender. Take your son. Go live your little, quiet, boring life and let the grown-ups take what Anthony built."
Khloe took the pen from Catherine’s hand.
"Khloe, don't," I pleaded.
She didn't look at me. She placed the folder against the wet porch railing, clicked the pen, and leaned over the paper.
"Khloe Vance," she said aloud, her voice eerily calm as she signed the first line.
Catherine smiled—a triumphant, venomous grin that stretched across her flawless face. "A wise girl. Anthony always said you had the brains."
Khloe finished the signature. Then, before Catherine could pull the document away, Khloe jammed the heavy gold pen violently into Catherine’s right palm.

Catherine shrieked—a piercing, animal scream that shattered the silence of the mountain.
