Chapter 18 - The Phantom Beneficiary

"He told you?" I asked, rising from the kitchen stool. "Anthony told you he went to Zurich?"

Khloe leaned against the kitchen counter, her face pale. She pulled her robe tighter, as though a draft had suddenly swept through the house.

"He didn't tell me why," she said softly. "It was right after our first trimester ultrasound. He called me from an international number. He sounded... terrified, Mark. He said he was fixing an old mistake so that our baby would never have to pay for his sins. I asked him what he meant, but he hung up. Two days later he was back in New York, and three weeks after that, he collapsed in his study."

I opened the laptop and turned the screen toward her.

Khloe stared at the document. Her eyes moved back and forth across the German-language letterhead, the storage logs, the name of the holding company. When she reached the line identifying *Genetic Source B*, her breath hitched.

"Third party contract?" she murmured, her voice trembling. "He... he had a surrogate? Another child?"

"Not a surrogate," I said, pulling up the receipt Isabella had enclosed. "A contingency. Anthony set up a secondary lineage trust. If Nathan didn't survive, or if your marriage to me didn't satisfy the trust's governance terms, the entire estate—the land, the real estate portfolio, the offshore accounts—transfers automatically to Vault 409."

"And Catherine?" Khloe’s voice climbed an octave. "Catherine was his wife! She walked away from the settlement with St. Jude’s. She let the court rule on the local embryos!"

"Because she didn't care about the local embryos, Khloe," I said, the ugly puzzle finally snapping together in my mind. "The embryos at St. Jude’s were a legal smokescreen. Catherine made you and Isabella fight like dogs over scrap metal while she kept her eye on the gold mine in Zurich."

Suddenly, the phone on the counter buzzed.

Both of us jumped. The screen illuminated with an unknown caller ID, originating from an unlisted Manhattan exchange.

I reached out and hit speakerphone.

"Mark," a voice whispered. It wasn't Catherine. It was Isabella. Her breathing was ragged, shallow, accompanied by the muffled rumble of traffic. "Did you find it? Tell me you didn't plug it in at your home address."

"Isabella?" Khloe stepped closer to the phone. "What did you do? What did father do?"

"Khloe? Oh God, Khloe, hang up!" Isabella choked out, panic bleeding through the receiver. "They pinged the MAC address on the card! They were waiting for someone to mount the drive! Get Nathan out of the house. Now!"

A sharp, violent crack shattered the night outside.

Glass exploded in our front foyer. The heavy thud of combat boots slammed onto the hardwood floor below our bedroom.
