Chapter 22 - Catherine’s Master Stroke

"Call off your men," I said, stopping at the base of the porch steps, five feet below her. "The police have your hired gun in custody in our dining room."
Catherine offered a thin, pitying smile.
"You think that man is with the police, Mark? Check your local news. A private security team dispatched by the Vance Estate arrived at your residence twenty minutes after you fled. The intruder has already been relocated to an undisclosed medical facility. No police reports. No records. Just a quiet suburban home with a broken window."
"You can't bury this," I said, my hand resting near the hidden tire iron. "We have the Swiss ledger. We know about Vault 409."
Catherine didn't flinch. In fact, her smile broadened.
"Did you really believe Anthony went to Zurich to create a replacement heir?" She opened the manila folder and pulled out a single sheet of paper, stepping to the edge of the top step. "Anthony Vance was a brilliant venture capitalist, Mark, but he was a terrible father and an even worse husband. He didn't go to Switzerland to clone himself for an investment syndicate."
She held the document out toward me.
"Take it. Read it."
I kept my distance, my eyes locked on hers. "Tell me what it says."
"It’s a certified paternity affidavit," Catherine said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, clinical precision. "Dated seven months ago. Anthony didn't freeze an embryo in Vault 409. He deposited genetic tissue to prove a pre-existing lineage."
Khloe’s car door clicked open.
"Mark!" she called out, stepping into the rain, clutching Nathan against her chest. "Don't listen to her!"
"Let her hear it, Mark," Catherine said, her eyes shifting to Khloe with razor-sharp intensity. "Let your wife hear what her sainted father actually did before he died."
"What did he do, Catherine?" Khloe demanded, walking toward the porch, her voice trembling in the freezing rain.
"Anthony didn't trust you, Khloe," Catherine said softly. "He knew you were married to a man he considered weak. A school counselor. A man who couldn't protect his empire. So before Anthony died, he altered the primary trust to state that Nathan would only inherit if his biological father was proven to be of Vance descent."
My heart stopped. The world around me seemed to lose all sound except the pounding of the rain.
"What are you saying?" I whispered.
May you like
"I’m saying, Mark," Catherine purred, "that Anthony didn't leave Vault 409 to replace Nathan. He left it to prove that Nathan isn't yours."
