Chapter 9

The warm golden light from the wall sconces illuminated the subtle, refined details of Kieran’s face—the sharply defined jaw, the high-bridged nose, and the faint, assessing narrowing of his eyes. He looked at the beautiful housemaid not as a servant, but as a woman of profound substance.
"Did you believe I would allow Miranda to dismiss you?" Kieran asked, his voice a low, vibrating rumble in the quiet corridor outside Flora's bedroom.
"I didn't know what to believe, sir," Annie admitted, her expressive brows drawing together. "She is from a very powerful family. I know how important these alliances are to the syndicate."
"Is any alliance worth the price of my daughter's tears?" Kieran questioned, his gaze dropping briefly to the fading bruise on her cheek before returning to her eyes.
Annie felt a sudden, electric jolt at the intensity of his stare. Her slender figure remained perfectly still, the sophisticated black maid dress feeling suddenly very warm.
"You broke the engagement," Annie said, stating the obvious fact, still struggling to comprehend the magnitude of what had occurred downstairs.
"Will my enemies interpret tonight as a moment of weakness, or a declaration of absolute boundaries?" Kieran asked, turning slightly to look down the long, empty hall. "Does a man who cuts off his own right hand to cure an infection look weak, or does he look like a man who will stop at nothing to survive?"
"They will be angry," Annie whispered, understanding the violent repercussions of the mafia world. "Miranda's father will retaliate."
"Do you fear the coming war, Annie?" Kieran asked, turning his full attention back to her.
"I fear for Flora," Annie answered honestly, her maternal instincts for the motherless child overriding her own self-preservation.
Kieran’s cold eyes softened by a fraction of a millimeter. He raised his right hand. The artistic tattoos across his fingers flexed as he gently, almost hesitantly, reached out. He did not touch her face, but his knuckles lightly grazed the crisp white collar of her uniform.
"Will you trust me to keep the violence far from these walls?" Kieran asked softly.
"I trust you," Annie breathed, the words escaping her lips before she could overthink them.

"Will you accompany me to my study?" Kieran inquired, his hand dropping back to his side. "Will you help me review the new security protocols I am enacting for the estate?"
Annie nodded, her fair, rosy cheeks flushing a delicate pink. She followed the towering Mafia boss down the brightly lit corridor, realizing that her life had just irrevocably intertwined with the most dangerous man she had ever met. The fear was gone, replaced by a profound, magnetic pull toward the man who had burned his own empire down to protect them.
