Chapter 1

The evening dinner inside the Ashbourne mansion was a masterclass in curated perfection, a glittering facade masking the ruthless reality of the men and women seated around the polished walnut tables. Cascading crystal chandeliers cast a soft, elegant, and warm golden light across the gilded ceiling moldings and ivory-paneled walls. In the grand dining room, tall candles flickered steadily inside heavy silver candelabras, their glow catching the pristine white roses, crystal stemware, and gold-rimmed porcelain. Seated in champagne velvet chairs, the elite members of the local syndicates spoke in hushed, polite American accents. Their fair, rosy skin was illuminated by the clear, soft reflected light that left no corner of the luxurious room in shadow.
At the head of the room stood Kieran Ashbourne, the undisputed head of the family. At forty-four, the Mafia boss possessed a movie-star handsomeness that demanded absolute, terrifying attention. He had powerful, broad shoulders that perfectly filled his tailored dark three-piece suit. His face was angular, marked by a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jaw, and extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes scanned the room, missing nothing. Generously spaced, refined artistic tattoos crawled across his hands and fingers, matching a small, elegant neck tattoo just visible above his crisp collar. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand, catching the light alongside his polished wristwatch and leather shoes.
Beside him stood Miranda Wells, his thirty-three-year-old fiancée. She was a vision of sculpted aristocracy in a satin evening gown that hugged her curves perfectly. Diamond earrings flashed as she laughed at a joke made by one of the underbosses, her massive engagement ring catching the candlelight.
"The evening is an absolute triumph, Kieran," Miranda said, her voice smooth and dripping with practiced charm. She placed a manicured hand lightly on his forearm. "The guests are entirely captivated by the new chef's menu. Everything is flowing beautifully."
Kieran did not look at her hand. He slowly turned his head, his cold eyes resting on her flawless, smiling face. His voice, when he finally spoke, was deep, low, and laced with measured, controlled pauses.
"Do you believe a successful menu equates to a successful evening, Miranda?"
It was a known, chilling quirk of the Mafia boss; his dialogue consisted exclusively of questions. It was a psychological tactic that kept everyone around him perpetually off-balance, forced to constantly justify their own existence and words.
Miranda’s smile tightened for a fraction of a second before recovering its brilliant wattage. "Of course not, darling. But it certainly helps maintain the morale of our associates. We are projecting strength and unity."
"Is unity simply a matter of pouring expensive wine down the throats of liars?" Kieran asked, his gaze drifting away from her and toward the heavy silk curtains at the far end of the room.
"You are so cynical tonight," Miranda teased softly, though a flicker of genuine irritation crossed her eyes. "I have worked tirelessly to ensure this dinner goes off without a hitch. We need these alliances."

"Have I ever required a dinner party to maintain my alliances?" Kieran murmured, stepping away from her touch.
His attention had already shifted entirely. He looked toward the carved marble fireplace, where the heavy mahogany doors to the kitchens had just swung open. The subtle tightening of his jaw signaled to anyone paying attention that the meticulously maintained peace of the evening was about to fracture.
