Chapter 6 - The Shadow Across the Lawn

They laughed together under the warm sun, ready to start a beautiful new chapter together.

The morning breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine across the wide stone terrace.

Lily reached for another strawberry, her small fingers sticky with syrup, giggling at her father’s playful expression.

For the first time in months, Mark felt the heavy knot of tension in his chest begin to dissolve completely.

The nightmare of Victoria’s cruel schemes felt like a distant, fading memory.

The heavy court battles had ended, the prison gates were locked shut, and justice had finally been served.

He poured fresh orange juice into Lily’s cup, watching the morning sunlight dance across her golden curls.

Then, a sharp metallic click echoed from the tall wrought-iron security gate at the edge of the long driveway.

Mark looked up immediately, his protective instincts flaring to life in an instant.

The private delivery courier stood by the intercom column, sliding a thick black box through the drop slot.

No courier was scheduled to arrive on a quiet Sunday morning.

Mark stood up slowly, keeping his voice light and cheerful so Lily would not notice his sudden alarm.

"Stay right here with Mrs. Higgins, sweetheart," Mark said softly, gently patting Lily’s shoulder.

The live-in nanny stepped forward from the patio doors, nodding respectfully and placing a reassuring hand on Lily’s arm.

Mark walked down the manicured stone pathway, his shoes crunching against the clean gravel.

The air suddenly felt colder, as if a storm cloud had crept silently over the estate.

He retrieved the rectangular package from the security box and inspected the outside label.

There was no postage mark, no company logo, and no return address printed on the heavy wrapping.

Only four bold words were written in dark, sharp ink: *FOR THE HEIR OF THE ESTATE.*

A cold chill traveled down Mark’s spine as he carefully peeled away the adhesive tape.

Inside lay a vintage silver locket, tarnished at the edges, resting on a bed of dark velvet.

Mark’s breath caught in his throat, and his heart hammered violently against his ribs.

It was Eleanor’s locket—the cherished necklace belonging to Lily’s late mother, which had vanished on the night she passed away.

Beneath the silver locket sat a small folded piece of paper with handwritten cursive handwriting.

*Stone walls cannot keep family secrets buried forever.*

*You think prison bars will save her, Mark?*

*The real debt hasn't even been collected yet.*

Mark gripped the paper so tightly that his knuckles turned stark white.

Victoria was locked inside a maximum-security prison cell, stripped of all rights and privileges.

Yet here in his hands was Eleanor’s lost locket, delivered directly to his front door.

Victoria had never acted entirely alone.

Someone else was watching the house, watching Lily, and preparing to strike.
