Chapter 10 - The Intruder at Midnight

Mark refused to wait until morning to bolster the estate's defenses.

He relocated Lily and Mrs. Higgins into the reinforced master suite on the second floor.

The room had solid steel-core doors, impact-resistant windows, and a dedicated panic alarm system.

Two off-duty police officers hired by Detective Reynolds stood guard downstairs in the main foyer.

Outside, the night grew pitch black, with thick storm clouds swallowing the moon entirely.

A violent downpour began to pound against the glass, drumming a relentless rhythm against the roof.

Mark sat in the leather armchair beside Lily’s bed, holding Eleanor’s restored locket tightly in his palm.

Lily slept soundly under the warm blankets, hugging her favorite stuffed bear close to her chest.

At exactly two o'clock in the morning, the master bedroom lights suddenly flickered and died.

A heavy silence fell over the house as the hum of the central air conditioning ceased completely.

The backup generator should have kicked in within five seconds, but nothing happened.

The external power lines had been physically severed from the breaker panel outside.

From the hallway downstairs, the sharp crack of shattering glass cut through the quiet rain.

A sudden gunshot rang out, followed by the sound of heavy scuffling on the marble tiles below.

Mark sprang to his feet, pulling a licensed firearm from the bedside lockbox.

"Mrs. Higgins, stay in the closet with Lily and lock the inner bolt," Mark whispered fiercely.

The elderly nanny nodded tearfully, ushering the half-asleep child into the reinforced closet space.

Mark stepped into the dark upstairs corridor, the floorboards silent beneath his socks.

The smell of ozone and spent gunpowder drifted up the wide spiral staircase.

One of the private security guards lay unconscious near the bottom step, his weapon kicked aside.

At the far end of the upper balcony, a tall silhouette dressed in dark rain gear stepped through the storm doors.

The intruder held a heavy steel crowbar in his gloved right hand.

He moved with chilling confidence, completely unbothered by the security measures.

As lightning flashed through the skylight, the man's face was illuminated for a fraction of a second.

A long, jagged scar ran down his left temple, ending right above his hollow cheekbone.

It was Julian Vance.

"You're trespassing on private property, Julian," Mark said, raising his weapon with steady aim.

"Step back or I will fire."

Julian didn't flinch; instead, he twirled the crowbar lightly, his scarred mouth curling upward.

May you like

"You shoot me, Mark, and you'll never find the antidote Eleanor needed," Julian murmured in the dark.

"You'll never know how she really died."
