Chapter 12 - A Public Confrontation

The following morning broke gray and misty over the downtown financial district.

Mark arrived at First National Bank the very minute the heavy brass doors opened for business.

Detective Reynolds accompanied him, holding an official court-authorized search warrant for safety deposit box 418.

The elderly bank manager led them down into the subterranean vault, unlocking the reinforced steel compartment.

Mark pulled out the long metal box with trembling hands, setting it down on the private viewing table.

Inside lay an assortment of dated legal documents, several micro-cassette tapes, and a sealed black envelope.

The documents were corporate transfer agreements dating back seven years, bearing Eleanor’s original signature.

They transferred nearly forty percent of Eleanor's personal estate into an obscure offshore trust fund.

Mark flipped the page and stopped dead in his tracks.

The co-trustee of the fund was not Julian Vance, nor was it Victoria.

The designated co-trustee was Arthur Vance—Victoria and Julian’s father, who had supposedly passed away ten years ago.

"Look at this," Mark whispered, his voice cracking with shock as he showed the page to Reynolds.

"Arthur Vance didn't die ten years ago."

"He faked his death to escape bankruptcy, and Eleanor was funding his offshore accounts."

"Why on earth would Eleanor fund the father of the woman who destroyed your family?" Reynolds asked, bewildered.

Mark opened the sealed black envelope, pulling out a folded piece of parchment written in Eleanor's delicate script.

*My beloved Mark,* the letter began.

*If you are reading this, my silence has cost me everything.*

*Before I met you, my father made a terrible business deal with Arthur Vance.*

*They used illegal practices that nearly bankrupted hundreds of innocent families.*

*To keep my family’s name from public ruin, I agreed to pay Arthur a quiet monthly stipend.*

*When Arthur’s health failed, Victoria approached me, using the old debt to worm her way into our social circles.*

*She found out about Lily's birth and threatened to expose our family's past if I didn't introduce her to you.*

*I am growing weaker every day, Mark.*

*The tea Victoria brings me tastes like bitter copper.*

*If I do not wake up tomorrow, protect our daughter from them at all costs.*

*They don't just want wealth; they want to erase every trace of us to hide their own crimes.*

Tears of burning rage and unbearable sorrow filled Mark’s eyes.

Eleanor had not died of natural causes.

She had been slowly, systematically murdered by Victoria, trapped under the weight of an old family secret.

And now, the Vance family’s vendetta was continuing against Lily.
