Chapter 8: The DNA That Exposed Them

The DNA report sat on the table between us.

A simple piece of paper.

But somehow it carried twenty-four years of secrets.

My mother picked it up.

Her hands were shaking.

“This isn’t possible.””

Lily looked at her.

“I thought the same thing.””

My father stared at the report.

“What does it say?””

Lily answered quietly.

“It says Maya and I are sisters.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

But I couldn’t tell if it was guilt.

Relief.

Or grief.

“You searched for me,” Lily said.

Nicole looked up.

“I did.””

“When?””

My mother swallowed.

“After I found out about the message.””

Lily laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“So you looked for me only after everything started falling apart?””

My mother had no answer.

Lily looked away.

I understood her anger.

Because I felt it too.

But something still bothered me.

“Who sent both of us those messages?””

Everyone looked at my phone.

The answer was obvious.

Someone wanted us to find the truth.

But why?

Daniel stepped closer.

“Maybe we should check the number.””

My father nodded.

“I already did.””

Everyone looked at him.

“You did?””

He pulled out his phone.

“The number is fake.””

My stomach tightened.

“Of course it is.””

“But,” Dad continued, “the photo was real.””

“How do you know?””

“Because it was taken yesterday.””

That made no sense.

The person sending messages wasn’t just revealing old secrets.

They were watching us.

My father looked at Daniel.

“Who knew about Lily?””

Daniel became quiet.

Then he said:

“Someone in the family.””

My mother looked terrified.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel sighed.

“Because the hospital records were sealed.””

Lily looked between them.

“Who could access them?””

Nobody answered.

Then my father said:

“My father.””

The room changed.

Again.

Everything returned to the same person.

A dead man.

A man who had apparently controlled everyone’s lives before we even understood it.

“My grandfather hid Lily,” I said.

Daniel nodded.

“Maybe.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You know something.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

“Tell me.””

Daniel sighed.

“When your grandfather found out Nicole was pregnant, he was furious.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“He wanted me to marry Richard.””

My father looked shocked.

“Why?””

“Because he thought Daniel would ruin the family.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“And he was right about one thing.””

Everyone looked at him.

“I was irresponsible.””

My mother looked down.

“But he went too far.””

Daniel continued.

“He paid someone to take Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

My father stepped forward.

“Are you saying my father kidnapped a baby?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I’m saying he arranged for Lily to disappear.””

Lily stood.

“And everyone just let it happen?””

Nobody answered.

She looked at my mother.

“You never searched?””

“I did.””

“When?””

“When I was older.””

“And?””

My mother cried.

“I was told you were dead.””

Lily looked broken.

Then she turned to me.

“I’m sorry.””

I frowned.

“For what?””

“For coming into your life like this.””

The words surprised me.

Because she wasn’t the person who hurt me.

She was the person who had been hurt too.

I stepped closer.

“You’re not the problem.””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw my sister.

Not a stranger.

Not a secret.

My family.

Then my father’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

He just handed me the phone.

The caller ID showed one name.

A name that made everyone freeze.

*Grandpa Robert.*

Impossible.

My grandfather had been dead for twelve years.

The call continued ringing.

And then a voicemail appeared.

My father pressed play.

A man’s voice filled the room.

Older.

Rough.

Familiar.

“If you’re hearing this, it means my secret finally came out.””

Nobody breathed.

Then the voice continued:

“And Maya…”

I froze.

“How does he know my name?””

May you like

The recording played one final sentence.

“You were never supposed to find Lily.””
