Chapter 5: The Baby Who Changed Everything
The hospital smelled like disinfectant and fear.
I never understood how a place designed to bring life into the world could feel so heavy.
My mother sat in the waiting room, staring at the floor.
My father sat across from her.
Daniel stood near the window.
And I sat between three people who had changed everything I believed about family.
A nurse walked toward us.
“Nicole Collins?””
My mother stood.
“Yes.””
The nurse looked at the folder.
“We need to discuss the results.””
My father immediately stood.
“What results?””
The nurse hesitated.
“Are you family?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel said:
“Yes.””
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“Mrs. Collins came in because of concerns about the pregnancy. The blood work shows inconsistencies.””
My mother gripped the chair.
“What kind of inconsistencies?””
The nurse looked at the paperwork.
“The pregnancy dates do not match the timeline provided.””
My father frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the conception date is different from what Mrs. Collins believed.””
My mother covered her mouth.
I looked at her.
“You didn’t know?””
She shook her head slowly.
“No.””
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
The nurse continued.
“We also found another issue.””
“What?””
“The father listed on the appointment paperwork is not the biological father.””
Everyone looked at Daniel.
But he shook his head.
“No.””
The nurse looked confused.
“The DNA test confirms that.””
My mother whispered:
“Then who?””
Nobody had an answer.
The nurse closed the folder.
“We need Mrs. Collins to speak privately with the doctor.””
My father stepped forward.
“I’m her husband.””
The nurse looked at him.
“Then you should hear this too.””
We followed her into the room.
The doctor sat with another file.
“Mrs. Collins, we reviewed your records.””
My mother nodded.
“What’s wrong?””
The doctor took a breath.
“The baby’s DNA does not match Daniel Carter.””
My mother looked at Daniel.
He looked shocked.
“But we already tested.””
The doctor nodded.
“Exactly.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Then who is the father?””
The doctor opened the file.
“I’m afraid we can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because the biological father has not been identified.””
My mother started crying.
I watched her.
For the first time, I didn’t see the woman who betrayed us.
I saw someone who had created a disaster she no longer understood.
Then the doctor said:
“There is another matter.””
My father looked up.
“What?””
“The test results show something unusual.””
The room became silent.
“What unusual?””
The doctor looked at me.
Then at my parents.
“The baby’s DNA has a partial match with another person already connected to this family.””
My blood went cold.
“Who?””
The doctor hesitated.
Then answered.
“Your daughter.””
Everyone turned toward me.
I felt like the room tilted.
“What?””
The doctor looked confused.
“Maya, your DNA was included because your mother listed you as a family contact.””
My father stared.
“That’s impossible.””
The doctor slowly shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the report.
“It’s not impossible.””
My mother whispered:
“What are you saying?””
The doctor placed the paper down.
“The baby is genetically connected to Maya.””
Nobody breathed.
My father looked at me.
Daniel looked terrified.
And my mother covered her mouth.
Because suddenly, the biggest secret in our family wasn’t who my mother slept with.
It was why my DNA was connected to a baby that wasn’t mine.
Then my phone buzzed.
The same unknown number.
