Chapter 4 - Shadows of the SyndicateThe heavy steel blast doors slammed shut with a concussive THUD, sealing the trauma unit off from the main house. The frantic gunfire on the other side suddenly sounded muffled, like distant thunder.

Inside the sealed room, the air grew thick with the smell of ozone and cordite.

Alessia clutched Valerio's shirt, her knuckles white. "Protocol Omega? Valerio, what does that mean?"

"It means the house is now a fortress," Valerio said calmly, setting her down gently onto a reinforced steel bench against the far wall. "No one gets in. No one gets out. Not until I input the master key."

"Valerio, look at this," Lucian said, kneeling by the fallen Russian mercenary. He pulled off the man's tactical helmet and pulled a encrypted radio from his belt. The radio was crackling with a female voice speaking in frantic Russian.

Lucian translated in real-time, his brow furrowing deeper with every word. "She's saying... the asset has been localized. Target the groom, secure the bride alive."

Valerio stood up, his tall frame casting a long shadow under the pulsing red emergency lights. "They don't want to kill you, Alessia. They want to capture you. Why?"

Alessia shook her head wildly. "I don't know! I'm just a curator! My father was a high school history teacher! I have nothing to do with the Bratva or the Mafia!"

"Are you sure about that, Alessia?"

The voice didn't come from Valerio, nor Lucian. It came from the intercom speaker mounted on the high ceiling.

The voice belonged to Eleanor DeLuca, Valerio’s mother.

Valerio stepped toward the speaker, his expression darkening. "Mother. You have five seconds to explain why you poisoned my wife before I come out there and strip you of your title."

A cold, aristocratic laugh echoed through the speaker. "Oh, my foolish, besotted son. You think you fell in love with a innocent flower. You think she was just a helpless girl who stumbled into your orbit."

Alessia froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. "She's lying, Valerio! I don't know what she's talking about!"

"Tell him, Alessia," Eleanor's voice purred over the intercom. "Tell him who your real father was. Tell him about the Sokolov archives."

Valerio turned his gaze back to Alessia. The intensity in his eyes was staggering. "Alessia. What is she talking about?"

"I... I don't know!" Alessia sobbed, trembling. "My father's name was Arthur Vance! He died when I was ten!"

"Arthur Vance was an alias!" Eleanor shouted through the speaker, her tone turning venomous. "His real name was Nikolai Sokolov! The former head accountant for the Russian Syndicate! He vanished fifteen years ago with forty billion dollars in offshore accounts—and the encryption keys were buried in his daughter's DNA!"

The room fell into an agonizing silence.

Lucian looked from the speaker to Alessia, his gun hand trembling slightly. "Is this true? Dr. Cole, the nerve agent... why did it act so quickly?"

Dr. Cole looked up from his medical bay, his face pale. "The nerve agent... it wasn't meant to kill her. It was a catalyst. It was designed to react with a specific synthetic protein already present in her blood stream."

Valerio stepped closer to Alessia, his shadow engulfing her shivering form. "You’ve been taking daily supplements, haven't you? The ones your father left you before he died."

Alessia swallowed hard, the realization striking her like a physical blow. "The iron pills... he told me I had a rare blood disorder. He made me promise to take one every morning..."

"They weren't iron pills," Dr. Cole whispered in horror. "They were nanite-markers. A living biological vault. The paralysis isn't a disability, Valerio... it's the system locking down the vault because the wrong sequence was entered."

Suddenly, the steel blast doors groaned as a heavy thermal drill began cutting through the four-inch titanium frame from the outside. Sparks showered into the room like blinding fireworks.

"They're coming," Lucian warned, raising his weapon.

Valerio stood between the cutting torch and Alessia. He drew his second weapon, his face turning into a mask of absolute, terrifying resolve.

"Let them come," Valerio whispered.
