Chapter 3 - The Purge of the AlleyClara let out a sharp, terrified gasp, her hands flying to cover her daughters' ears as she pulled them behind her toward the rear of the basement room.

"It's them..." Clara whispered, her face paper-white, her body trembling violently. "The loan sharks from the waterfront... they came back!"
I didn't panic. I didn't step back.
The cold, hollow grief that had frozen my soul for two years evaporated entirely, replaced by an absolute, terrifying rage—the rage of a billionaire who commanded entire shipping fleets, security networks, and city officials.
I pulled my satellite phone from my inner suit pocket, tapping three buttons on the encrypted screen.
"Marcus," I spoke flatly into the receiver, my voice dropped into an icy, frozen register that made Clara shudder. "I am at the basement apartment of 412 West 47th Street. I have three armed extortionists at my door. Bring the tactical security convoy. Now."
MARCUS VANCE: "We are two blocks away, Don Reed. ETA sixty seconds."
I ended the call, sliding the phone back into my pocket.
CRACK!
The wooden door frame splintered as a heavy boot kicked the deadbolt open!
Stepping into the basement apartment, holding a heavy steel crowbar and a suppressed pistol, was Gavin Sterling—a notorious West Side enforcer who ran predatory lending rings targeting struggling single mothers across Manhattan.
Behind him stood two broad-shouldered hitmen in heavy leather coats.
"Well, well," Gavin sneered, his bloodshot eyes sweeping over the small room, landing on me in my tailored suit. "What do we have here? A rich white knight playing hero for a broke widow?"
"Gavin," I said flatly, taking two slow, deliberate steps forward, placing my broad body directly between his gun and Clara’s daughters. "You have thirty seconds to drop your weapons and kneel on this concrete floor."
Gavin laughed—a harsh, barking sound that echoed off the damp walls. "You think your expensive suit frightens me, mister? I own this block! This woman owes my boss eighty thousand dollars for her late husband's ICU bills! Either she pays, or—"
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The heavy rear windows of the basement room were thrown wide open!
Four armed operatives from Vance Security—clad in dark tactical gear, carrying high-powered flashlights and automatic sidearms—poured through the entryway, their laser sights painting dark red dots directly across Gavin Sterling's chest and head!
Standing in the doorway, holding a heavy custom Sig Sauer pistol, was Marcus Vance—my chief security director.
"Drop your weapons!" Marcus commanded, his deep baritone booming like thunder through the small room. "Hands behind your heads! NOW!"
Gavin Sterling’s crowbar clattered flat against the concrete floor. His pistol slipped from his trembling fingers as he stared at the red laser dots covering his body, his face turning an ugly, paper-white shade of green.
"R-Reed... Reed Sullivan?!" Gavin stammered, recognizing my face from the covers of Forbes and the Wall Street Journal. "My God... you're Sullivan!"
"Marcus," I ordered flatly, my voice cold as glacier ice. "Deliver these three to the Federal District Prosecutor. Hand over the forensic records of their predatory loan network. Make sure Gavin Sterling spends the next twenty-five years in a maximum-security federal facility."

"Right away, Don Reed," Marcus replied, locking heavy steel handcuffs around Gavin’s wrists behind his back.
Gavin and his hitmen wept pathetic, groveling pleas as Vance security officers dragged them out of the basement apartment in total, public disgrace.
